THE EVIDENCE: NO PRE-TRIB RAPTURE IN PSEUDO EPHRAEM

I have printed Pseudo Ephraem (Ephrem//Ephraim) below in order to demonstrate that the pre-tribulation rapture cannot be found within this document.

Translated from the text in Edmund Beck, ed., Des heiligen Ephraem des Syrers Sermones III (CSCO 320; Louvain: Secrétariat du Corpus SCO, 1972), 60-71; see also 79-94 for Beck’s translation. The text is based on two manuscripts: (1) Codex Vaticanus Sir. 566, and (2) Codex Dublinensis (Trinity College) B 5.19. Editio princeps: Thomas Josephus Lamy, ed., Sancti Ephraem Syri Hymni et Sermones (4 vols.; Mechliniae: H. Dessain, 1882-1902), 3:187-212.

A discourse (memra) of the holy saint Ephrem, the Syrian teacher, concerning the end, (final) consummation, judgment, and punishment; on the people of Gog and Magog; and about the Antichrist.

O Son who by His grace humbled Himself

And who was pleased to make Himself a human being;

Who willingly experienced death

At the top of the wood(en cross) on Golgotha:

Grant me, my Lord, (the ability) to speak about

The struggles which will take place in the created order;

For peoples will fall upon each other

And nations will destroy one another,

Evil will fortify itself on the earth

And iniquity will increase throughout creation.

Righteous rulers will perish

And lawless ones will arise on the earth.

Then a judgment will arise,

And a weighing on the scale for those humans:

The side (containing) the wicked will sink down;

And that for the elect will rise up.

Then spiritual entities will go forth

And destroy the ends of the created order.

It will happen, my brethren, just as it is written:

A plague in a number of places,

And a famine will occur in the created order;

Terrible struggles and conflicts.

Dust will be saturated with blood;

The created order will be polluted from iniquity.

Regions will be ravaged,

And cities will be consumed by Sheol;

Nation will rise up against nation

And kingdom against kingdom.

Lawlessness will be sovereign on earth

And the defiled will pursue after the saints.

People will openly apostatize

And augment the left side;

The righteous ones will suffer indignities

From those who belong to the side of the sinners.

It is due to this, my beloved ones

That the final age has arrived.

Lo, we have observed the signs,

Just as Christ inscribed for us:

Rulers will arise, one against another;

There will be suffering on earth;

Nations will contend with nations

And armies will fall upon one another.

When the Nile, the river of Egypt,

Overflows (and) floods part of the land,

Certain regions will prepare themselves

Against the country of the Romans.

Nations will contend with nations,

And a kingdom with a kingdom.

They will depart, moving from one land to another;

Those Romans who are put to flight.

And the Assyrians will gain authority

Over the region of the Romans.

The fruit of their loins they will subjugate

And they will also ravish their women;

They will be sowing and also reaping

They will plant fruits in the ground;

They will acquire vast riches

And hoard treasures underground.

But just as the Nile, the river of Egypt

Recedes again from what it flooded;

So too will Assyria recede

Back to their own country.

For the Romans once again will be found

In their ancestral land (i.e., the Assyrians’).

Then evil will increase on the earth

And the land will be defiled with fornication.

The cry of the persecuted and the wretched

Will rise up to heaven.

Then a judgment will arise

To cast them out of the land.

The holy covenant will complain;

A cry will rise up to heaven.

A people will emerge from the wilderness,

The progeny of Hagar, the handmaid of Sarah;

Who hold fast to the covenant with Abraham,

The husband of Sarah and Hagar.

Set in motion, he (Ishmael) comes in the name of the ram,

The herald of the Son of Destruction.

A sign will appear in the heavens,

The one our Lord spoke of in His gospel:

Luminaries will shine among the stars

And the light of His face will gleam.

Rulers will quake and tremble;

The forces arrayed by them will fall.

The peoples of the earth will be terrified

When they behold the sign set in the heavens.

They will prepare for battle and come together,

All peoples and nationalities.

They will wage war there

And the ground will be drenched with blood.

The nations will suffer defeat there,

A marauding nation will prevail.

The marauders will fly over the landscape,

Across plains and over the peaks of mountains.

They will take women and children as captives,

Also men both elderly and young.

The best of the males will be destroyed;

The most desirable women will be removed.

With strong spears and lances

They will impale elderly men.

They will separate a son from his father,

A daughter from the side of her mother;

They will separate a brother from his brethren,

A sister from the side of her sisters.

They will slay the bridegroom in his bedroom

And expel the bride from her bridal chamber.

They will take a wife away from her husband,

And slaughter her as if she were a sheep;

They will cast an infant away from its mother

And drive the mother into captivity.

The child will scream out on the ground:

Its mother hears, but what can she do?

For it will be trampled by the hooves

Of horses, camels, and infantry!

She (tries to) turn toward it, (but) they will not allow her;

The child remains within the wild (?).

They separate children from their mother

As the soul (is separated) from the body.

She watches while they divide them up,

Her beloved ones (taken from) the embrace of her bosom;

Two of her children to two (different) masters,

Her own self to still another master;

She has been allocated, and her children with her;

For they are now slaves to robbers.

Her children cry out with laments,

Their eyes burning with tears;

She turns toward her beloved ones,

The milk flowing forth from her breast:

‘Farewell, my beloved ones!

May God go with you!

The one who accompanied Joseph

In (his) servitude among foreigners:

May He accompany you, my children

Into the captivity where you are going!’

‘Farewell, our mother!

May God go with you!

The one who accompanied Sarah

Into the palace of Abimelech the Gadarite:

May He accompany your own self

Until the Day of Resurrection!’

The son will stand and watch while his father

Is sold into slavery.

The eyes of both of them will burn with tears

While they groan, one in front of the other.

A brother will watch while his brother

Is killed and cast down on the ground,

Whereas he they drive off into captivity

In order to serve among foreigners as a slave.

They even put to death mothers

Who are holding their children to their breasts.

Bitter is the sound of the infants

Who are groaning to satisfy their desire (for milk).

They will prepare roads in the mountains,

Highways in the middle of the plains;

They will maraud until the very ends of the created order.

They will establish rule over the urban centers.

The provinces will suffer destruction,

And they will multiply corpses on the earth.

All peoples will be brought low

Before the marauder nation.

And once the peoples have endured much on earth

And hope that now peace has arrived,

They (the Ishmaelites) start exacting tribute

And everyone will be fearful of them.

Lawlessness will intensify on the earth

And even obscure the clouds;

Wickedness will enclose the created order

And waft up like smoke to the heavens.

Then since wickedness will be rampant upon the earth,

The Lord’s wrath will then stir up

Kings and mighty armies.

For when He seeks to expunge it from earth,

He sends out humans against humans

To annihilate one another.

Truly at that time He will summon

The kings and mighty armies

Who are behind those gates

Which Alexander fashioned.

Many rulers and peoples

Remain behind the gates.

They look toward heaven

And call on the name of God,

That the Lord send His sign

From within His heaven of glory

And the Divine Voice

Summon them who are by those gates;

So that they suddenly break down and collapse

At the command of the Divinity.

Numerous armies issue forth,

As many as the stars which cannot be counted.

As multitudinous as the sand by the sea,

And exceeding (the number of) the stars in the sky.

A full span was consumed

From the lower crossbar;

And from the upper crossbar

Another full span was consumed

On account of the great quantity of their sharp spears

With which they lacerated it. They issued forth,

Moving, spilling forth from there;

Kings and large armies

And every people and language group

Emerging from (behind) those gates.

Gog and Magog and Nūl and Agag,

Kings and mighty armies!

Togarmah and Ashkenaz and Daypar,

Pūìayē with Lūbayē.

Amzartayē and Garmēdō‘,

Talab with helmet-covered heads,

Azmurtayē and Kūshayē,

Hunayē and Parzayē,

Diqlayē and Tūbalayē,

Mūshkayē with Kūshayē.

Allied to and coming with them

Were both the Medes and the Persians,

Armenians and Turks

And Namrūhayē and Mūshhayē;

The descendants of Ke’wan and Serug;

The progeny of Yaqtan and the Mahūnayē;

Numerous armies and nations

Whose number cannot be calculated.

They will burst forth and flood the earth,

Shaking the walls of the created order.

A dust cloud will rise up over the earth,

Obscuring the sun above

And covering creation

With clouds and dark fogs,

In accordance with what Ezekiel prophesied,

The son of Buzi in his prophecy.

For when the Huns come forth

To wage war and to do battle,

They will take hold of pregnant women

And heap fire on top of them;

They will come closer and mutter incantations over them,

While roasting their children inside them!

Splitting them open, they extract their fetuses

When they are finished cooking inside of them.

They draw near: then place them in basins,

And pour water over them

And dissolve their corpses there

In those enchanted waters.

They immediately take their swords

And their bows with their spears

And dip them in those waters

For their arrows and their weapons.

Every weapon to which are applied

Those magical potions

Appears as if there are hundreds, even thousands

Of cavalrymen who wield them.

Moreover those hundreds of horsemen

Who set out (and) traverse the whole of the earth

Appear as if they are accompanied

By six thousand myriads.

If one of them should fall off during battle

While engaging in the fight,

Wherever he extends his hand

Suddenly a knife emerges!

They eat the flesh of children

And also drink the blood of women.

Clothed in tanned skins,

They mount the winds and tempests;

And rapidly, in the blink of an eye,

They lay waste to cities,

Topple their walls to the ground,

And destroy the strong citadels.

Moving quickly, they bind the swift

And slaughter the vigorous men.

They are quicker in motion

Than winds and tempests.

Whenever news of them is heard on earth (to wit)

‘The Huns have set out (and) are coming!’

They blanket the whole of creation.

Because they are sorcerers,

They fly between heaven and earth.

Their chariots are like the winds,

And their swords and their lances

Are like terrifying bolts of lightning.

Holding straps in their hands

And two or three horses,

Each one of them leads with him

Some fifty or sixty men,

Traveling behind and in front of him

Like winds and tempests.

The sound of the battle-cry of just one of them

Is like the roaring of lions.

Indeed dread of the Huns

Will overpower the entire earth;

They will cover the whole earth

Like the waters during the days of Noah,

And they will overwhelm the edges of the created order:

There is no one who can withstand them.

These are the ‘numerous peoples’

About whom Ezekiel spoke

Who will cover the whole earth

As if they were clouds.

‘Fish will shudder before them,

(As will) the birds of the sky

And wild beasts and vermin of the earth

And every species in creation;

High mountains will be thrust down

And fortified towers will collapse,

Even the walls of the cities.’

On the earth will be a wasteland.

For Ezekiel has prophesied

That it will come to pass in the End of Days:

They will burst out (and) come up from the land

And cover the created order;

Gog and Magog will prepare itself

And arrive at the ‘hill country of Israel.’

Between the sea and Jerusalem

He will place his encampment.

Riders will fly off, descending

Upon Egypt and opposite India;

Leading away so many captives they cannot be numbered.

People and riches,

Cattle and property

Which have now become his prey.

Then Righteousness will summon

Michael, the one who is leader of the host,

To come down (and) destroy his encampment

Just as (he destroyed) the encampment of Sennacherib.

The angel, receiving the command, will draw

The terrible and powerful sword,

And departing, he will destroy his force

In the twinkling of an eye!

Righteousness will pick up and hurl

Stones of fire upon the encampment.

The slain on the ground will be as numerous

As the (particles of) sand which cannot be counted;

People and pack-animals will perish,

The entire encampment will be consumed.

The blaze will extend

Unto the sea and to the islands.

The bow will swerve from the hands

Of Gog, the wicked ruler;

Also his arrows (will drop) from his left hand:

His entire encampment will be consumed.

The inhabitants of Judaea will go out

And loot his whole encampment.

They will collect and pick up armament:

Lances, arrows, and bows.

For seven years within a fire

They will burn them, as it is written:

‘They will not need to gather

Wood from the field or thickets.’

Seven years they will throw in the fire

Shields and clubs,

Arrows, spears, and bows.

They will prove sufficient for fueling the fire for seven years.

Then the Lord will bring in His peace,

Which attests His glorification among the heavens.

And once more the empire of the Romans

Will spring up and flourish in its place.

It will possess the earth and its extremities,

And no one will exist who opposes it.

And when iniquity has become rife on earth

And has polluted the whole of creation,

Then a judgment will arise

Which will entirely obliterate the people.

The Son of Destruction, the Evil One,

Will emerge and come upon the earth.

A deceiver of humanity,

An instigator of trouble over the whole earth.

On the day when he comes to it,

(when) the Son of Destruction arrives on earth,

The created order will be thrown into commotion,

And terror will engulf the earth.

The sun will become dark in its place,

And the stars will fall from the height;

All the luminaries will be quenched,

Darkness will cover the created order.

The earth with its inhabitants will shake,

And mountains and heights will quake;

Springs and fountains will dry up,

And the waves in the sea will abate

And the fish therein grow still.

Rulers will stop rendering judgment

And priests will tremble in the sanctuary

And military power will collapse.

Confusion will be on the earth

And all human powers will be paralyzed,

For the Evil One will be ready.

He will come to and enter Jerusalem.

He will rebuild and establish himself in Zion,

And will make himself to be God

And enter into the sanctuary to take a seat

In accordance with what the Apostle wrote to us.

The Jews will take pride in him;

They will prepare themselves and come to him.

And he moreover will blaspheme when he says:

‘I, even I, am the Father and the Son!

The First and the Last!

There is no other god apart from me!’

But at that time ten thousand Jews will denounce him:

They will answer him in truth:

‘You are a deceiver for (all) creatures!

For the one whom our ancestors restrained

At the top of the wood(en cross) on Golgotha

Is (actually) the redeemer of (all) creatures,

And he was raised up to the One Who sent him!’

Then the Evil One will be enraged

And he will issue a command regarding those who denounced him

That they should immediately die by the sword,

And everyone will be too afraid to renounce him.

Then he will begin to display

Wonders through deception

In the heavens and on the earth,

Within the sea and on the dry land.

He will summon the rain and it will fall;

He will command the seed and it will sprout

However he will not actually perform (miracles);

He will be employing magic.

He will command the waves and they will cease,

And the winds will be obedient to him.

He will suspend fruits on the trees

And cause water to gush from the ground.

He will address the leprous and they will become clean,

(Speak to) the blind, and they will see light,

He will call to the deaf and they will hear him,

(Address) even the mute and they will speak.

He will effect all the wonders

Which Our Lord performed within the created order,

Except that he will not be able to resurrect the dead,

For he will not have authority over (the) spirits (of the dead).

Lightening-flashes will be his messengers,

And are the sign of his advent;

Demons are his armies

And the commanders of the devils are his pupils;

He will dispatch the heads of his legions

To distant lands

Where they will display marvelous powers and healings

And mislead the whole of creation.

Behold, the Apostle has penned a warning for us

In his epistle to the Thessalonians:

‘Let no word or no letter

Trouble you that is not from us.

For the rebellion comes first,

Also the Man of Sin

And he will exalt himself over God,

Making himself to be God.’

And when the Accursed One comes

And displays his mighty works and wonders,

The nations will gather together and come

As (if) they were going to see God.

Groups and nations will join him,

And every person will renounce their deity;

Everyone will say of him to their fellow

That they should acknowledge him, the Son of Destruction!

Peoples will fall upon one another,

Slaying each other with swords.

The elect will flee from his presence

To the peaks of mountains and hills,

And there will be calamity on earth

Unlike any that came before.

Fear will fall upon all people

And they will be overcome with terror.

Children will renounce their father

And follow after the Evil One;

Priests will abandon their altars

To serve as his heralds.

People will flee to cemeteries

And hide themselves among the dead,

Pronouncing the good fortune of the deceased

Who had avoided the calamity:

‘Blessed are you for you were borne away (to the grave)

And hence you escaped from the afflictions!

But as for us, woe is us! For when we die,

Vultures will serve as escort for us!’

And if the days of that time were not shortened,

The elect would never survive

The calamities and afflictions.

For Our Lord revealed (and) disclosed to us

In his Gospel when He said:

Those days will be shortened

For the sake of the elect and the saints.’

And when he has harassed the whole of creation,

(When) the Son of Destruction (has bent it) to his will,

Enoch and Elijah will be sent

That they might persuade the Evil One.

With a gentle question

The saints will come before him,

In order to expose the Son of Destruction

Before the assemblies surrounding him:

‘If you are indeed God,

Tell us what we ask of you:

Where is the place that you have hidden

The elders Elijah and Enoch?’

The Evil One will respond and say

To the saints at that time:

‘When I wish (it), they are in the height(s),

Or again should I choose, they are within the sea;

For I have authority over habitations,

Since there is no other god apart from me

And I can make anything

On earth (and) also in heaven!’

They will answer

The Son of Destruction as follows:

‘If you are truly God,

Call out to the deceased so that they will rise!

For it is written within the books

Of the prophets and the apostles

That when the Messiah reveals Himself,

He will resurrect the dead from the graves.

If you cannot show us this (sign),

Then the One who was crucified is greater than you!

For he roused and resurrected those who were dead,

And was exalted in great splendor.’

Then the Evil One will become enraged

With the saints at that time;

He will draw his terrible sword

And sever the necks of the righteous ones.

But Gabriel will arise (and) descend

(With) Michael (as) military commanders;

They will resurrect those saints

While the Evil One stands confused with his servants.

They will approach and seize that Accursed One

And the Lord will rebuke (him) from heaven;

Then He will destroy the Accursed One

And all of his forces.

Angels will suddenly approach

And cast him into Gehenna,

And all of those who believed in him

Will be thrust into the flame(s).

Then the Lord will come from above

In splendor and with a company of His angels,

And between earth and heaven

A throne-chariot will be fixed there.

He will admonish the sea and it will dry up;

The fish within it will perish.

He will dissolve the heavens and the earth,

And there will be (only) darkness and gloom.

He will dispatch fire upon the earth,

And it will burn there for forty <days>

Purifying it of iniquity

And of pollution and of sins.

A great throne will be adorned

And the Son will be seated on the right;

Seats will be positioned

For the twelve apostles of the Son;

And couches will be decorated for the martyrs

And a royal chamber for the righteous ones.

The Watchers will blow trumpets

And the dead will arise from the dust;

Fiery entities will suddenly go forth

And assemble all the descendants of Adam.

They will gather the wheat in a storehouse

And throw the straw into the fire;

The good will go forth into the Kingdom,

And the bad will remain in Gehenna;

The righteous will fly up to the height,

And the sinners will burn in fire.

The martyrs will float to the couch;

The wicked will go out into darkness.

And Christ will reign forever,

He will be sovereign over each generation.

To Him be the glory, and His mercy is over us

For all time, amen, amen!

LEE BRAINARD'S APPALLING DISTORTION OF IRENAEUS!

(3) Explosive Pretrib Info — Irenaeus Was Pretrib — Irenaeus Linked to the Apostles - YouTube

The pre-trib rapture is a modern fiction that was introduced by deranged cult leader John Nelson Darby in the 19th century. The claim of a pre-trib rapture taught by the early Church Fathers was well and truly debunked when Thomas Ice and his associates tried to foist this falsehood onto the church some years ago. There is no trace of a pre-trib rapture either in the scriptures or in any documents prior to 1830.

Lee Brainard refers to Irenaeus as "ground zero" for the patristic rapture debate for two reasons. (1) Irenaeus was the earliest Church Father to write extensively on eschatology; (2 ) His close proximity to the apostles' teaching via Polycarp who“was instructed by the apostles, and was brought into contact with many who had seen Christ.” {1}

It is reprehensible that Brainard should continue to recycle previously debunked pre-trib arguments under the guise of doing "original research".

Against Heresies 5:29:1 And therefore, when in the end the Church shall be suddenly caught up from this, it is said, There shall be tribulation such as has not been since the beginning, neither shall be. Matthew 24:21 For this is the last contest of the righteous, in which, when they overcome they are crowned with incorruption. {2}

Brainard's argument summarised: "..the Church shall be suddenly caught up" precedes the phrase "there shall be tribulation". Brainard takes this wording as evidence for a pre-trib rapture without reference to context, or to Irenaeus' previous or subsequent assertions that support a post-trib rapture. As I have pointed out in a previous post, Brainard is simply recycling an old pre-trib argument by John Hart which was debunked by Alan Kurschner in 2019. Hart (and now Brainard) have misrepresented Irenaeus by taking a small portion of his writings entirely out of context. I recommend that those who are troubled by Brainard's pseudo-technical argument read Kurschner's article.

Kurschner: "In Hart’s proof text, I noticed that he conveniently omits the very next statement, where Irenaeus states: “For this is the last contest of the righteous, in which, when they overcome they are crowned with incorruption” (5.29.1).
Irenaeus states that the church will be caught up 'from this,' which he identifies as the great tribulation (cf. Matt 24:21, 31). So the question then is does 'from this' mean from before it happens or from as it is happening? Pr
etribs assume without any evidence that it means before it happens. But the statement that Hart carelessly omits constrains the meaning, which identifies “from this” with the period of great tribulation that the righteous will experience: 'For this is the last contest of the righteous, in which, when they overcome they are crowned with incorruption [resurrection].' Irenaeus is therefore linking 'the last contest of the righteous' with the period of great tribulation." {3}

Below are three significant passages from Against Heresies that refute Irenaeus' alleged support of the pre-trib rapture.

Against Heresies 5.26.1 And they [the ten kings who shall arise] shall lay Babylon waste, and burn her with fire, and shall give their kingdom to the beast, and put the Church to flight. {4}

Against Heresies 5.30.3-4 It is therefore more certain, and less hazardous, to await the fulfillment of the prophecy [2 Thessalonians 4:1-12], than to be making surmises, and casting about for any names that may present themselves, inasmuch as many names can be found possessing the number mentioned; and the same question will, after all, remain unsolved..   But he (Pau1) indicates the number of the name now, that when this man [the Antichrist] comes we may avoid him, being aware who he is: the name, however, is suppressed, because it is not worthy of being proclaimed by the Holy Spirit. {5}

Note that Irenaeus includes himself in the number of those preparing to identify the Antichrist.

Against Heresies 5.35.1 For all these and other words were unquestionably spoken in reference to the resurrection of the just, which takes place after the coming of Antichrist, and the destruction of all nations under his rule; in [the times of] which [resurrection] the righteous shall reign in the earth, waxing stronger by the sight of the Lord: and through Him they shall become accustomed to partake in the glory of God the Father, and shall enjoy in the kingdom intercourse and communion with the holy angels, and union with spiritual beings; and [with respect to] those whom the Lord shall find in the flesh, awaiting Him from heaven, and who have suffered tribulation, as well as escaped the hands of the Wicked one. {6}

Brainard's abysmal incompetence

Against Heresies 5.25.4  And towards the end of their kingdom a king of a most fierce countenance shall arise, one understanding [dark] questions, and exceedingly powerful, full of wonders; and he shall corrupt, direct, influence (faciet), and put strong men down, the holy people likewise; and his yoke shall be directed as a wreath [round their neck]; deceit shall be in his hand, and he shall be lifted up in his heart: he shall also ruin many by deceit, and lead many to perdition, bruising them in his hand like eggs. Daniel 8:23 etc. And then he points out the time that his tyranny shall last, during which the saints shall be put to flight, they who offer a pure sacrifice unto God: And in the midst of the week, he says, the sacrifice and the libation shall be taken away, and the abomination of desolation [shall be brought] into the temple: even unto the consummation of the time shall the desolation be complete. Daniel 9:27 Now three years and six months constitute the half-week.

Brainard: "The tribulation saints are those who offer acceptable sacrifice to God, and the sacrifices here are associated with the temple service. The temple service here is regarded as a true or a pure sacrifice."  Brainard assumes that the Law of Moses has been reinstated during the 70th week of Daniel and that the temple sacrifices carried out by the Jews are "God honoured". This is heresy! We should take into account that the temple sacrifices are reinstated following the "covenant with many" between the Antichrist and Israel (and others?). Just as the animal sacrifices offered by Orthodox Jews are invalid at the present time, they will be equally invalid during the 70th week of Daniel. No other sacrifice is acceptable to God other than the sacrifice of Jesus Christ once for all.. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. (Hebrews 9:26).

Revelation 11:1-2 - Brainard's flawed proof text that "God accepts the temple and those that worship in it."

Then I was given a measuring rod like a staff, and I was told, “Rise and measure the temple of God and the altar and those who worship there, but do not measure the court outside the temple; leave that out, for it is given over to the nations, and they will trample the holy city for forty-two months. And I will grant authority to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth.” (Revelation 11:1-3).

The timeframe and context of Revelation 11:1-14 does not allow for Brainard's conjecture that "God accepts the temple and those that worship in it". The two witnesses will minister during the second half of the seventieth week i.e. forty-two months/1,260 days, when sacrifice and offering have ceased. (Daniel 9:27 cf. 2 Thessalonians 2:4). The parenthetical section from Revelation 10:1-11:14 refers to an interlude between the sixth and seventh trumpet judgements when the seventh seal is broken. (Revelation 8:1). Brainard himself recognizes that the time frame of the two witnesses refers to the second half of the seventieth week, otherwise known as the great tribulation. {7} Revelation 11:1 alludes to the millennial temple. (Ezekiel 40:3,6 cf. Zechariah 2:1, Amos 7:7-9).

The obvious way to understand Against Heresies 5.25.4: And then he points out the time that his tyranny shall last, during which the saints shall be put to flight, they who offer a pure sacrifice unto God: And in the midst of the week, he says, the sacrifice and the libation shall be taken away.. "the saints" i.e. the church is referred to as they who offer a pure sacrifice unto God, not the Jews offering sacrifices in the temple during the first half of the 70th week. This interpretation agrees with the teaching of Jesus Christ: “But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near. Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, and let those who are inside the city depart, and let not those who are out in the country enter it, for these are days of vengeance, to fulfill all that is written. (Matthew 24:20-22).

There is a terrible irony in Brainard's distortion of Irenaeus, who was at pains to defend the faith against heresy! Not only do pre-trib teachers twist the scriptures, they also have no qualms about twisting the words of the Church Fathers. (Acts 20:29; Revelation 22:18-19).

LEE BRAINARD'S FALSIFICATION OF THE CHURCH FATHERS: IRENAEUS WAS NOT PRE-TRIB!

(160) The Pre-trib Rapture Before Darby, Part 2 | TWIBP - YouTube

Lee Brainard: "In modern dispensationalism, when we use the word 'church' we are referring, not to all the saints of all the ages. We are referring only to the saints basically from the time of Christ forward..[Gonzalez: 'Pentecost forward'] to the saints of this age. And we would put the Old Testament saints and the tribulation saints under the heading of Israel and maybe Gentile proselytes to Israel. It is a very different idea.."

My objection to Brainard's dispensational mindset is that the pre-trib camp has moved the goalposts. The scriptures should dictate our definitions, not dispensationalism or any other tradition. We do not impose our terminology upon the scriptures, rather the scriptures should dictate our terminology. Just because dispensationalists argue that the church is a particular group of believers during a particular time frame does not make it so. For instance, the apostle Paul sometimes refers to "the saints" and at other times he refers to "the church" at specific locations. In other words, when "the saints" are referred to in the book of Revelation, we cannot make the assumption that they are a separate or secondary group of believers distinct from the church.

To the saints and faithful brothers in Christ at Colossae" (Colossians 1:1).

To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours. (1 Corinthians 1:2).

Also it [the beast] was allowed to make war on the saints and to conquer them. And authority was given it over every tribe and people and language and nation.. (Revelation 13:7).

Another instance of pre-trib revisionism is the redefinition of the tribulation period. The early fathers referred to the final 3.5 years of the seventieth week of Daniel as "the great tribulation" in agreement with the scriptures. The pre-trib camp has lengthened the tribulation period to encompass the entire 70th week of Daniel i.e. seven years, in order to suit their own agenda.  (Matthew 24:21) (See Further Links)

Irenaeus - Against Heresies

Brainard gives three examples from Irenaeus Against Heresies that supposedly prove that he taught a pre-trib rapture. Although Irenaeus does make a distinction between the rapture and the second coming in Against Heresies 5.5.1, he indicates a prewrath rapture. In various other passages, Ireaneaus clearly states that the church will face the Antichrist prior to the rapture (see below).

Against Heresies 5.25.4 And then he points out the time that his tyranny shall last, during which the saints shall be put to flight, they who offer a pure sacrifice unto God: “And in the midst of the week,” he says, “the sacrifice and the libation shall be taken away, and the abomination of desolation [shall be brought] into the temple: even unto the consummation of the time shall the desolation be complete.” Now three years and six months constitute the half-week. {1}

Brainard's first example:
Against Heresies 5.5.1 For Enoch, when he pleased God, was translated in the same body in which he did please Him, thus pointing out by anticipation the translation of the just. Elijah, too, was caught up [when he was yet] in the substance of the [natural] form; thus exhibiting in prophecy the assumption of those who are spiritual, and that nothing stood in the way of their body being translated and caught up..  Wherefore also the elders who were disciples of the apostles tell us that those who were translated were transferred to that place (for paradise has been prepared for righteous men, such as have the Spirit; in which place also Paul the apostle, when he was caught up, heard words which are unspeakable as regards us in our present condition, and that there shall they who have been translated remain until the consummation [of all things], as a prelude to immortality. {2}

Above: Irenaeus makes a distinction between those who have been "translated" (the rapture) and "the consummation [of all things]", but a pre-trib rapture is not a concept that he is aware of.

Brainard's Second Example:
Against Heresies 5:29:1 And therefore, when in the end the Church shall be suddenly caught up from this, it is said, There shall be tribulation such as has not been since the beginning, neither shall be. Matthew 24:21 For this is the last contest of the righteous, in which, when they overcome they are crowned with incorruption. {3}

Above: Brainard is recycling an old pre-trib argument by John Hart that was debunked by Alan Kurschner in 2019. Kurschner's response: "Irenaeus states that the church will be caught up 'from this,' which he identifies as the great tribulation (cf. Matt 24:21, 31). So the question then is does 'from this' mean from before it happens or from as it is happening? Pretribs assume without any evidence that it means before it happens. But the statement that Hart carelessly omits constrains the meaning, which identifies “from this” with the period of great tribulation that the righteous will experience: 'For this is the last contest of the righteous, in which, when they overcome they are crowned with incorruption [resurrection].' Irenaeus is therefore linking 'the last contest of the righteous' with the period of great tribulation." {4}

In the same chapter Irenaeus continues to compare the time of the Antichrist with the wickedness of Nebuchadnezzar and the resistance of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego (Hebrew names ~Ananias, Azarias, and Misael) in Daniel 3; and also the six hundred years of Noah and the number of the beast. (Genesis 7:6). Irenaeus confirms that this pattern of events will be recapitulated during the time of the Antichrist, culminating in “a cataclysm of fire.. [upon the earth].”

Against Heresies, 5.29.2 And there is therefore in this beast, when he comes, a recapitulation made of all sorts of iniquity and of every deceit, in order that all apostate power, flowing into and being shut up in him, may be sent into the furnace of fire. Fittingly, therefore, shall his name possess the number six hundred and sixty-six, since he sums up in his own person all the commixture of wickedness which took place previous to the deluge, due to the apostasy of the angels. For Noah was six hundred years old when the deluge came upon the earth, sweeping away the rebellious world, for the sake of that most infamous generation which lived in the times of Noah. And [Antichrist] also sums up every error of devised idols since the flood, together with the slaying of the prophets and the cutting off of the just. For that image which was set up by Nebuchadnezzar had indeed a height of sixty cubits, while the breadth was six cubits; on account of which Ananias, Azarias, and Misael, when they did not worship it, were cast into a furnace of fire, pointing out prophetically, by what happened to them, the wrath against the righteous which shall arise towards the [time of the] end. For that image, taken as a whole, was a prefiguring of this man’s coming, decreeing that he should undoubtedly himself alone be worshipped by all men. Thus, then, the six hundred years of Noah, in whose time the deluge occurred because of the apostasy, and the number of the cubits of the image for which these just men were sent into the fiery furnace, do indicate the number of the name of that man in whom is concentrated the whole apostasy of six thousand years, and unrighteousness, and wickedness, and false prophecy, and deception; for which things’ sake a cataclysm of fire shall also come [upon the earth]. {5}

Brainard's third example:
Against Heresies 5.31.1 For as the Lord went away in the midst of the shadow of death, where the souls of the dead were, yet afterwards arose in the body, and after the resurrection was taken up [into heaven], it is manifest that the souls of His disciples also, upon whose account the Lord underwent these things, shall go away into the invisible place allotted to them by God, and there remain until the resurrection, awaiting that event; then receiving their bodies, and rising in their entirety, that is bodily, just as the Lord arose, they shall come thus into the presence of God. {6}

Above: Irenaeus mentions the rapture (resurrection), but once again he does not specify a pre-trib rapture.

Below are three significant passages from Against Heresies that refute the pre-trib rapture.

Against Heresies 5.26.1 And they [the ten kings who shall arise] shall lay Babylon waste, and burn her with fire, and shall give their kingdom to the beast, and put the Church to flight. {7}

Against Heresies 5.30.3-4 It is therefore more certain, and less hazardous, to await the fulfillment of the prophecy [2 Thessalonians 4:1-12], than to be making surmises, and casting about for any names that may present themselves, inasmuch as many names can be found possessing the number mentioned; and the same question will, after all, remain unsolved..   But he (Pau1) indicates the number of the name now, that when this man [the Antichrist] comes we may avoid him, being aware who he is: the name, however, is suppressed, because it is not worthy of being proclaimed by the Holy Spirit. {8}

Against Heresies 5.35.1 For all these and other words were unquestionably spoken in reference to the resurrection of the just, which takes place after the coming of Antichrist, and the destruction of all nations under his rule; in [the times of] which [resurrection] the righteous shall reign in the earth, waxing stronger by the sight of the Lord: and through Him they shall become accustomed to partake in the glory of God the Father, and shall enjoy in the kingdom intercourse and communion with the holy angels, and union with spiritual beings; and [with respect to] those whom the Lord shall find in the flesh, awaiting Him from heaven, and who have suffered tribulation, as well as escaped the hands of the Wicked one. {9}

Every single Church Father who wrote on this subject taught that the church would face the Antichrist.

I repeat that pre-trib rapture teachers are nothing less than false prophets who are setting up the church for a terrible fall! (Matthew 24:10-11). Brainard says nothing new - he is simply regurgitating old pre-trib arguments that have been previously debunked. Given the abundant evidence from various church fathers (e.g. The Epistle of Barnabas, the Shepherd of Hermes, Justin Martyr, Tertullian, Hippolytus, Cyprian), I wonder how Brainard can, in all conscience, dredge up these old arguments and pretend that he is doing "original research".

Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we ask you, brothers, not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by a spirit or a spoken word, or a letter seeming to be from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come. Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God. (2 Thessalonians 2:1-4).

I recently heard Andy Woods (another rabid pre-trib rapture teacher) glibly remark that if things do not pan out how they expect them to, they will have to redraw their prophecy charts. Frankly, the repercussions for pre-trib rapture teachers will be very serious indeed ~ their charts will be the last thing on their minds. (Luke 17:1). Are Lee Brainard, Mondo Gonzalez (Prophecy Watchers) and others, prepared to repent and take responsibility for propagating the lethal pre-trib deception initiated by the insane cult leader John Nelson Darby?

LEE BRAINARD'S PRE-TRIB RAPTURE HYPE

(159) The Pre-trib Rapture Before Darby, Part 1 | TWIBP - YouTube

The "ten sayings" Brainard claims to have found in Ephraim to prove a pre-tribulation rapture is duplicitous. Brainard does not provide pre-trib rapture evidence from either Pseudo Ephraim (Ephrem the Syrian) or Eusebius. Furthermore, Brainard's claim that he is doing original research is patently untrue. Extensive research has already been undertaken by bible scholars, and these sources have been rejected as proof texts for the pre-trib rapture. There is no scriptural evidence to support the pre-trib rapture, and furthermore, no early church father claimed that the church would be raptured before the arrival of the Antichrist!

When the early fathers referred to the tribulation, they referred to the "great tribulation" i.e. the final 3.5 years of the seven-year period known as the 70th week of Daniel. (Matthew 24:21). The pre-trib camp has redefined the tribulation period to seven years in order to suit their own disingenuous agenda. (See further links) If Lee Brainard and Mondo Gonzalez (Prophecy Watchers) have any fear of the Lord or any regard for the truth, they really need to stop this nonsense. Pre-trib teachers are nothing less than false prophets who are setting up the church for a terrible fall! (Matthew 24:10-11)

LEE BRAINARD'S PHONY TRANSLATION OF EUSEBIUS DOES NOT PROVE THE PRE-TRIB RAPTURE!

(38) The PRE-TRIB RAPTURE According to EUSEBIUS | Guest: Lee Brainard - YouTube

The pre-trib camp has been desperate to find confirmation of a pre-tribulation rapture amongst the Church Fathers for many years, but despite all their efforts, they have failed to do so.

Brainard is not the trailblazer or the Greek expert he claims to be in this interview with Lamb and Lion Ministries. Brainard: "I have uncovered passages in Eusebius that were unknown to the evangelical world." Unless evangelical scholars live in a bubble, they will be aware of Eusebius. Author and historian Roger Pearse published the first-ever translation of Eusebius into English in 2017. This translation includes the Greek text printed in the Sources Chrétiennes edition, and also fragments of the Greek, Latin, Syriac, Coptic and Arabic versions in medieval bible commentaries. Alex Poulos' translation (published by Pearse) differs from Brainard's translation.

Alex Poulos' translation

“And just as happened in the days of Noah…” (Lk. 17:26)

As was stated,[1] he says that the destruction of the wicked will take place like it did for those who lived at the time of the flood, since the message of the gospel had been driven out due to their apostasy. Indeed, just as he destroyed all people then, except those who had gone with Noah into the ark, so too at his coming he will shut out and destroy as in the days of Noah the ungodly and unfaithful, who waste their time on luxury, sex, drink, and the pleasures of this life.

So that no one would think these too will perish through water, he needed also to use the example of Lot— “Just as it happened in the days of Lot: ‘they were eating, drinking etc.’ but on the day that Lot left Sodom, he rained fire from heaven and destroyed everyone. It will be the same on the day when the Son of Man is revealed.” He thereby teaches that unspeakably terrible wrath will come upon all the wicked as fire and brimstone sent from heaven. Thus, the word of the prophet is extended to the wicked who pray for that day to come— “Woe to you who desire the day of the Lord!” Why? “it will be darkness to you, and not light; a day of darkness and shadow, a day of dispair and disgrace” (Amos 5:18). The Savior was extremely precise in his observation when he said that the divine fire from heaven did not come down upon the wicked in Sodom until Lot went out and was separated from them. It was the same way at the flood, when he came and destroyed all the inhabitants of the earth only after Noah had entered the ark. [24.585] He says that it will be the same at the end of the age: the cataclysm of destruction for the wicked will not occur until those men found to belong to God are gathered into the heavenly ark, in accordance with the example of Noah. To these this word of the prophet will be spoken: “Go, my people, enter into your inner room… until the wrath of the Lord passes by” (Is. 26:20). Now just as in the time of Lot he acted so that the righteous did not perish along with the wicked, so at the end of age this destruction will not take place until all the righteous and God-fearing men on the earth are separated from the wicked and gathered into God’s heavenly ark. So when no righteous man can any longer be found among men, but all are godless, impious, and born from the antichrist and apostasy rules throughout the whole world, then the wrath of God will come upon the wicked. {1}

Pearse's publication confirms the prewrath rapture position. Eusebius refers to the righteous being taken (raptured) immediately before the wrath of God falls upon the unrighteous at the end of the great tribulation. (Matthew 24:21-22,30-31). In other words, the rapture will occur between the sixth and seventh seal of Revelation. (Revelation 6:17).

Lee Brainard's translation

As all perished then except those gathered with Noah in the ark, so also at his coming, the ungodly in the season of apostasy shall perish, while according to the pattern of Noah, all the righteous and godly are to be separated from the ungodly and gathered into the heavenly ark. For in this way comes a time when not even one righteous man will be found any more amongst mankind, and when all the ungodly have been made atheists by the Antichrist, and the whole world is overcome by apostasy the wrath of God shall come upon the ungodly. {2}

Brainard: "So, you notice the order here. First, the righteous are removed from the presence of the ungodly and taken to the heavenly ark. And then there’s a season of apostasy down here on earth where not even one righteous man is going to be found, and the Antichrist is going to take all the ungodly and make them all perfect atheists, and then the wrath of God will come at the Second Coming." {2}

Regarding Brainard's "original" translation of Eusebius' commentary on Isaiah 43:5-6: Eusebius' commentary on Isaiah was translated into English by Jonathan J Armstrong in 2013. {3} Jonathan J Armstrong (Ph.D., Fordham University) is assistant professor of Bible and theology at Moody Bible Institute - Spokane, Washington. {4}

Pseudo Ephraim (Ephrem the Syrian) is another example of Brainard's duplicity! Please refer to Dave MacPherson's article on this subject written in 2017: WOLVES IN SHEEP'S CLOTHING: FALSE PROPHETS AND BIBLE TEACHERS IN THE LAST DAYS: PSEUDO-EPHRAEM TAUGHT PRETRIB - NOT! BY DAVE MACPHERSON (bewareofthewolves.blogspot.com)

Brainard's claim that he is doing original research is patently untrue - he is certainly no "Indiana Jones". Furthermore, Brainard is either incompetent or unwilling to give an accurate interpretation of Eusebius and Pseudo Ephraim. Neither of these sources teach a pre-tribulation rapture.

Alan Kurschner: "Every early church father who wrote on this topic believed that the church would face the Antichrist.. It is common knowledge that the church fathers used terms like 'the tribulation' or 'the great tribulation' to refer to God's wrath. Yet can you provide a single instance where Ephraim or an early writer claimed that the church will be raptured before the Antichrist arrives?" {5}

Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God. For there are many false prophets in the world. (1 John 4:1 cf. Ephesians 4:25).

LEE BRAINARD'S DESPERATE ACCUSATIONS AGAINST THE PREWRATH RAPTURE

(4) The Source of the Pre-Wrath Rapture | Lee Brainard - YouTube

In an attempt to distance the pre-trib rapture from the vision of 15-year-old Margaret MacDonald, Lee Brainard informs us in this video that John Nelson Darby rejected her end-time vision. It is true that John Nelson Darby and Benjamin Wills Newton of the Plymouth Brethren came to the conclusion that Margaret's visions were demonic. I do not think there is any disagreement on that score as this information is well documented. However, Brainard failed to mention that Edward Irving (1792-1834) played a pivotal role in this story. Edward Irving and his controversial sect known as the "Irvingites" (the Catholic Apostolic Church), were precursors of the later Pentecostal and Charismatic movements. Irving accepted Margaret MacDonald's vision and claimed her as one of their own prophetesses.

David Malcolm Bennet: "..with regard to the adoption of a two-stage return of Christ, the first being associated with a pretribulation rapture of the saints. Irving taught something similar to it in March 1830, and at least some in the CAC seem to have adopted a pretribulation rapture by September that year. Darby and other members of the Brethren do not seem to have accepted it until later. Darby, himself, probably did not adopt this teaching until after December 1831,[26] so later than the CAC and, thus, presumably later than Irving." {1}

Whilst it cannot be definitively proved that Margaret MacDonald was the source for Darby’s concept of a pretribulation rapture, her vision seems to be the catalyst for his ideas. Samuel Prideaux Tregelles alleged that the pre-trib concept was taken from one of the charismatic utterances in Edward Irving's church. Tregelles regarded these utterances as "pretending to be from God", and he implied that Darby's rapture teaching was from a demonic source.

Dave MacPherson: "For several decades some pretrib leaders have deceitfully isolated Margaret Macdonald's posttrib-resembling statement 'The trial of the Church is from Antichrist' to try to establish that she was posttrib. I have in mind leaders like R. A. Huebner, Charles Ryrie, Thomas Ice, and Frank Marotta. The same prophecy teachers are among those who've covered up the fact that partial rapturism----Margaret's view----sees a pretrib rapture of PART of the church while also seeing the REST of the church enduring a future tribulation..
Professor Ryrie wonders how Margaret can declare that 'the trial of the Church is from Antichrist' (lines 85-86) and speak of 'the fiery trial which is to try us' (line 65) if the Church will 'be caught up' before Antichrist arrives (lines 39-40). Apparently he's unaware of the terminology used by Partial Rapturists.
{2}

It appears that Darby, who was a renowned cult leader and a bully, jumped onto the Irvingite bandwagon and claimed the (questionable) glory for the pre-trib rapture doctrine in the late 1830s. Dave MacPherson: "Darby was posttrib from 1827 through 1838 and he had no clear pretrib teaching before 1839 - nine years after Irving and his group had begun the clear teaching of it." {3}

The prewrath position that the church will encounter the Antichrist is taken from the scriptures and from the early church fathers. I know of no prewrath teacher or scholar that endorses Margaret MacDonald's vision.  Prewrath does not teach a "secret rapture" as Margaret MacDonald apparently does. (Matthew 24:30; Revelation 6:15-16).

Margaret MacDonald: "Only those who have the light of God within them will see the sign of his appearance. No need to follow them who say, see here, or see there, for his day shall be as the lightning to those in whom the living Christ is. 'Tis Christ in us that will lift us up - he is the light - 'tis only those that are alive in him that will be caught up to meet him in the air." {4}

Margaret MacDonald's ramblings seem to be a confusing mishmash of various spiritual ideas. These (possibly demonic) ideas came from a very sick 15-year-old girl and they were not properly tested by Irving and others. (1 John 4:1). Brainard's deranged rantings against the prewrath view are desperately inaccurate and should be rejected out of hand.

LEE BRAINARD'S BLATANT MISREPRESENTATION OF THE PREWRATH RAPTURE VIEW

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4N-6Lb40v7c?cc_lang_pref=
Demolishing the Pre-Wrath Rapture / Lee Brainard

Lee Brainard: "Many of us have friends that are wrestling with the pre-tribulation rapture versus the prewrath rapture or maybe some other version".

According to Lee Brainard, the prewrath rapture view is the biggest threat to the pre-trib view. In the above video, he confirmed various reports that a number of pre-trib believers are turning towards the prewrath view. I find this admission very encouraging, and it is good to know that a significant number of pre-trib believers are seriously considering the prewrath view.

It is very concerning that Brainard felt the need to give such an offensive refutation of the prewrath rapture view. His portrayal of the prewrath rapture was highly distorted in a number of key areas, and his misrepresentations were unworthy of a bona fide bible teacher. (Titus 1:7-8). A huge concern for many Christians is whether pre-trib really is the scriptural position. The correct way to critique another view, even if we strongly disagree with it, is to represent it accurately, and Brainard singularly failed in this respect. Such a blatant misrepresentation of the prewrath rapture view is likely to have very serious consequences, both for Brainard himself - who will have to give an account, and for his hearers. (Romans 14:12). Unless believers are prepared to research this subject themselves, they are likely to be misled by some teachers, who, for their own reasons, are determined to misinform them.

It would be a grave mistake to pay attention to Brainard's detrimental remarks about prewrath teachers. In particular, his claim that prewrath teachers do not know the scriptures and that they are deliberate deceivers is disingenuous. In view of his own flawed presentation, Brainard should consider whether these accusations apply to himself. In my experience, prewrath teachers are head and shoulders above their counterparts within both the pre-trib and the post-trib camps. The false hope of a pre-trib rapture poses a signicant risk to the faith of many believers. (Matthew 24:10, Jeremiah 23:16; Proverbs 13:12).

There is no information that the pre-trib rapture view existed prior to the mid 1800's despite the combined efforts of many pre-trib scholars to find it. The pre-trib rapture theory is a relatively new doctrine that fails to find specific confirmation in the scriptures. (1 John 4:1). The history of the pre-trib rapture theory has been extensively explored in my previous posts: WOLVES IN SHEEP'S CLOTHING: FALSE PROPHETS AND BIBLE TEACHERS IN THE LAST DAYS: Rapture (bewareofthewolves.blogspot.com)

Brainard weighed in almost immediately with the extraordinary claim that the prewrath view is "to argue from the position of fear". He continued: "We want to argue from the position of faith." The accusation that prewrath believers are operating in fear was a heavy handed attempt to discredit this view. Brainard's not so subtle attempt to discourage believers from testing the spirits is to go explicitly against the scriptures. (1 John 4:1; Acts 17:11). His ungodly tactics effectively erect a stumbling block in front of believers who are genuinely uncomfortable with the pre-trib view. (2 Corinthians 6:3). My own motivation for holding the prewrath view is a sincere desire to know the truth! (John 8:32; Luke 12:4).

Brainard's alleged six fatal arguments against the prewrath rapture view

1. There is no time between tribulation and second coming

Brainard: "The rapture and the arrival of the day of the Lord concur.. Their major premise is that the day of the Lord arrives at the sixth seal.. The rapture happens at the opening of the sixth seal.. The wrath doesn't start until after the sixth seal opens."

The above is is a blatant misrepresentation of the prewrath view!

The prewrath view clarified

The prewrath view maintans that the rapture occurs between the 6th and the 7th seals. Matthew 24 and Revelation 6 and 7 confirm that the prewrath rapture occurs between the cosmic disturbances at the sixth seal in Revelation 6:12-14, and the opening of the 7th seal in Revelation 8:1.The period of God's wrath (the day of the Lord) begins with the seventh seal trumpet judgements in Revelation 8:6 ff.

Brainard's claim: "Based on Matthew 24:29-30, there is no time between the tribulation and the second coming."  Brainard "forgot" to mention Matthew 24:31 which explicitly refers to the rapture! The cosmic signs referred to in Acts 2:19-20, Joel 2 and Isaiah 13 indicate the imminency of the rapture. The prewrath view sees the parousia as an extended period of time, beginning with the rapture, as against a single isolated event at Armageddon.

Immediately after the tribulation of those days: ‘The sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.’ At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and all the tribes of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory. And He will send out His angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other. (Matthew 24:29-31).

Brainard's persistent error throughout this video is to insist that "the day of the Lord" is the entire 70th week of Daniel. The prewrath view asserts the biblical distinction between "the beginning of birth pains" (the first half of the 70th week), Satan's wrath i.e. the great tribulation (thlipsis) (the second half of the 70th week), followed by God's wrath (orge). Biblically, the great tribulation begins 3.5 years after the Antichrist confirms "the covenant with many for one week" in the middle of the 70th week of Daniel. (Daniel 9:27). The great tribulation will last for a time, time and half a time i.e. three and a half years, 42 months or 1,260 days (cut short -Matthew 24:22 cf. Daniel 12:2). The day of the Lord is initiated at the 7th seal. (Revelation 8:1-5).

So when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let the one who is on the housetop not go down to take what is in his house, and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak. And alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a Sabbath. For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be. And if those days had not been cut short, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short. (Matthew 24:15-22).

2.  The Identity of the twenty-four elders in Revelation 4-5

Brainard: "The church are in heaven in Revelation 4 and 5 prior to the opening of the first seal."

Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and seated on the thrones were twenty-four elders, clothed in white garments, with golden crowns on their heads. (Revelation 4:4).

..and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.” (Revelation 5:10).

In Revelation 5:10, the twenty-four elders distinguish themselves from the church whom they refer to in the third person. Revelation 4-5 describes the scene in the throne room of God immediately prior to the opening of the first seal. The scene depicts precise numbers i.e. twenty-four thrones, twenty-four elders, four living creatures and the Lamb, nothing more. The addition of the church is an allegorization of the text and is a weak attempt to strengthen pre-trib predilections. (Revelation 22:18-19).

Meyer: "..for they are distinguished from believers, Revelation 5:10 (according to the correct reading), Revelation 7:9 sqq., 14, Revelation 11:16 sqq.; and the glorified as yet wear no crowns, but are expecting only the time of dominion (Revelation 2:10 to Revelation 6:9); but it is the heavenly council, composed of representatives of the people of God in heaven.” {1}

The scene described in Revelation 7 at a later stage depicts "a great multitude" i.e. all believers including the raptured church.

After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, (Revelation 7:9).

3. The economy is back to Mosaic Law during the 70th week

Brainard seemed to get confused and I am not sure if he finished making his third point. The prewrath view maintains that both Jews and Christians will be on the earth simultaneously during the 70th week of Daniel i.e. until believers are raptured some time after the sixth seal is broken. The prewrath view rejects the error of hyper-dispensationalism, in particular, the false claim that the gospels are not relevant to the church.

4. Kept from the hour of trial

Because you have kept my word about patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial (πειρασμοῦ) that is coming on the whole world, to try (πειράσαι) those who dwell on the earth. (Revelation 3:10).

The hour of trial or testing (peirasmos) coming on the whole world is the wrath of God. God's wrath begins after the great tribulation and is carried out during the seventh seal trumpet and bowl judgments. (Revelation 8-9, Revelation 15:1,5-8, 16:1-21). Those believers who keep God's word and are faithful during the great tribulation will not suffer God's wrath. (1 Thessalonians 5:9). Unfortunately the pre-trib view fails to make the appropriate distinction between Satan's persecution against believers, and God's wrath on the whole world.

5. The Greek preposition ὑπὲρ (uper)

Brainard argues that the Greek preposition ὑπὲρ (uper) is translated wrongly as περί (peri) by prewrath scholars in 2 Thessalonians 2:1. Brainard's paraphrase of this verse: "We plead with you brethren, because of the rapture, not to worry about the day of the Lord."

"ὑπὲρ (uper) ~ A primary preposition; "over", i.e. (with the genitive case) of place, above, beyond, across, or causal, for the sake of, instead, regarding; with the accusative case superior to, more than -- (+ exceeding, abundantly) above, in (on) behalf of, beyond, by, + very chiefest, concerning, exceeding (above, -ly), for, + very highly, more (than), of, over, on the part of, for sake of, in stead, than, to(-ward), very. In the comparative, it retains many of the above applications." {2}

ESV: Now concerning (ὑπὲρ) the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to Him, we ask you, brothers, not to be easily disconcerted or alarmed by any spirit or message or letter seeming to be from us, alleging that the Day of the Lord has already come. Let no one deceive you in any way, for it will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness—the son of destruction—is revealed. (2 Thessalonians 2:1-3).

KJV: Now we beseech you, brethren, by (ὑπὲρ) the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him.. (2 Thessalonians 2:1).

The preposition ὑπὲρ (uper) with the genitive case frequently refers to the object under consideration - concerning, of, as respects, with regard to.. on behalf of, beyond. {2} The translation of ὑπὲρ as "concerning" or "regarding" in this verse is a legitimate translation in my view. I do not claim to be an expert in biblical Greek by any means, but having studied the subject at degree level I do have some knowledge. Brainard's quibbling over ὑπὲρ appears to be an attempt to confound his audience with his alleged "knowledge" of biblical Greek. I am not quite sure why Brainard spent so much time making this point since it makes no difference to the argument. The discussion in these verses in context is the coming (parousia) of the Lord Jesus Christ and the rapture. It appears that the Thessalonians had received a message or a letter allegedly from Paul that had misled them into thinking that the day of the Lord had already come. Brainard's interpretation does not alter the fact that the rapture precedes the day of the Lord i.e. the wrath of God, and that the day of the Lord does not begin until the 7th seal is opened following the great tribulation, the cosmic disturbances and the rapture. Brainard repeats the error of failing to distinguish the period of wrath that follows the great tribulation. (Matthew 24:29).

6. The strong delusion is judgement

For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work. Only he who now restrains it will do so until he is out of the way. And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of his coming. The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness. (2 Thessalonians 2:7-12 cf. Revelation 3:10).

Brainard refers to the strong delusion as the day of the Lord. He fails to distinguish between the strong delusion and the actual period of God's direct eschatological wrath upon the earth which begins with the seven trumpets in Revelation 8. In both the Old Testament and the New Testament, the common element that delineates God's eschatological wrath is FIRE. (Joel 2:3; Isaiah 66:15; Malachi 4:1; 2 Peter 3:7; 1 Thessalonians 1:7-8; Revelation 8:5, 7, 8). The seven bowls of wrath  (Revelation 6:16, 8:6-13, 15:1 16:1 cf. Revelation 14:10) are the culmination of God's wrath.

Pulpit Commentary: "It is the ordinance of God that the wicked by their wicked actions fall into greater wickedness, and that thus sin is punished by sin; and what is an ordinance of God is appointed by God himself. That they should believe a lie; or rather, the lie, namely the falsehood which the man of sin disseminates by his deceit of unrighteousness. Being destitute of the love of the truth, they are necessarily led to believe a lie - their minds are open to all manner of falsehood and delusion." {3}

Is the day of the Lord a literal 24-hour day?

Brainard has three separate definitions for the day of the Lord: the common sense which he thinks is the entire 70th week; the legal sense which he thinks is a literal 24-hour day (Malachi 4:1-3; James 1:9-11); and the figurative sense, the millennium. The problem with Brainard's convoluted view is that the scriptures do not refer to the day of the Lord in these terms.

It will be a day known only to the LORD, without day or night; but when evening comes, there will be light. (Zechariah 14:7).

Alan Kurschner: "..the term 'one day' should be better properly translated 'unique day' or 'never-ending day.' This is the rendering of most modern versions. For example: 'And there shall be a unique day, which is known to the LORD, neither day nor night, but at evening time there shall be light' (Zech 14:7 ESV, emphasis mine). See also the NIV and NASB for the same rendering. In other words, translators recognize that the context suggests this new era will be unique in redemptive history. It will be the new established conditions that will be ongoing. Thus, rendering and interpreting it as 'one day” misses the oracle’s point entirely." {4}

Out of context verses cited by Brainard

Brainard ends his abysmal presentation with two out of context verses which have no relevance to the day of the Lord.

"And on that day,”declares the Lord GOD, “I will make the sun go down at noon and darken the earth in broad daylight. (Amos 8:9 cf. Matthew 27:45).

This verse refers to the crucifixion, not the day of the Lord.

Coffman: "This is Amos' answer to the question propounded by the dishonest traders in Amos 8:5, 'When will the new moon... and the sabbath ... be gone?' Very well, the answer was: 'At that time when the sun goes down at noon, and the earth is darkened in a clear day,' an undeniable reference to the crucifixion of the Son of God, that being the only occasion in the history of the world when the sun set at noon, and the earth (not just a portion of it, but all of it) was darkened in a clear day! We may only marvel at the blindness of Biblical interpreters who fail to see this." {5}

God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns. (Psalm 46:5).

Psalm 46 concerns Israel's deliverance from the Assyrians and has no relevance to the day of the Lord. Pulpit Commentary: "The deliverance of Israel from Sennacherib came, it is to be remembered, when it was discovered 'early in the morning' that in the camp of the Assyrians were 185,000 'dead corpses' (2 Kings 19:35)." {6}
