The pre-tribulation rapture theory is so deeply flawed and dangerous that it absolutely necessitates a strong challenge. (Jeremiah 23:16; Proverbs 13:12). The history of pre-trib stands on very shaky ground. (Matthew 7:26-27). The theory was popularised by false teacher and cult leader John Nelson Darby in the 19th century. Prior to Darby, the pre-trib rapture view was completely unknown, although I have heard its proponents falsely claim otherwise. The men who further popularised the pre-trib rapture in the late 1990's, were to put it mildly, of very dubious character. Tim LaHaye (Left Behind), Chuck Missler, Jerry Falwell, Paul Crouch, etc. were staunch supporters of cult leader Sun Myung Moon (Moonies) and were financially/politically compromised.{2}
Broadcaster Jan Markell (Olive Tree Ministries) aggressively promotes the pre-tribulation rapture. Jan refers to those of us who reject this view in favour of the pre-wrath or the post-tribulation rapture "naysayers". {3} I fear for people like Jan. (Matthew 12:36). Many who reject the pre-wrath/post tribulation rapture have not studied the scriptures objectively to see if these things are so. (Acts 17:11; 1 John 4:1). I do appeal to Jan and friends to revisit this subject and to reconsider their position.
The Old Testament "prophets of doom" were also categorised in equivalent terms as "naysayers". They spoke the truth, although they met a great deal of derision and persecution. Those who tickle itching ears give the people what they want to hear rather than what they need to hear. (2 Timothy 4:3; Isaiah 30:10).
Hananiah the false prophet is a striking case in point:
In that same year, at the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the fifth month of the fourth year, Hananiah the son of Azzur, the prophet from Gibeon, spoke to me in the house of the Lord, in the presence of the priests and all the people, saying, “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon. Within two years I will bring back to this place all the vessels of the Lord’s house, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took away from this place and carried to Babylon. I will also bring back to this place Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and all the exiles from Judah who went to Babylon, declares the Lord, for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.” (Jeremiah 28:1-4).
Hananiah's prophecy was appealing, even to Jeremiah in some sense. However, in reality it was nothing more than a pipe dream:
Jeremiah: "Amen! May the Lord do so; may the Lord make the words that you have prophesied come true. Yet hear now this word that I speak in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people. The prophets who preceded you and me from ancient times prophesied war, famine, and pestilence against many countries and great kingdoms. As for the prophet who prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comes to pass, then it will be known that the Lord has truly sent the prophet.” (Jeremiah 28:6-9)
Problematically, the test of whether a prophecy comes to pass (or not) will come too late for those who have been deceived by the pre-trib error. The consequences of false pre-trib rapture expectations will be enormous! The great tribulation will begin suddenly at the mid point of the 70th week of Daniel, when the Antichrist takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God. (2 Thessalonians 2:4). At this late stage, it appears that many will have put all their hope in escaping persecution and will fall away. Many Christians will not be sufficiently "rooted in Him" to understand or endure the unparalleled persecution of the Antichrist. (Matthew 24:21; Colossians 2:6-7; Revelation 14:12).
Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away. (Matthew 13:5-6).
As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away. (Matthew 13:20-21).
And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another. (Matthew 24:10).
The Generation That Will Not Pass Away – JD Farag, Amir Tsarfati, Jack Hibbs, Billy Crone and Eric Barger - 5th July 2019.
In the above video below, Jan has compiled excerpts from longer interviews during her Understanding the Times Conference 2018. I have picked up on a couple of points as follows:
JD Farag's Poor Theology. (11:00) - The pre-tribulation rapture permeates the entire teaching of Jan and her friends, and in the process it distorts the teaching of Jesus Christ. (Galatians 5:9). Both Jan and JD equate the pre-trib rapture with the "blessed hope". The context of Titus 2:13 describes the blessed hope as "the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ." The blessed hope is intimately bound up with the glorious appearing i.e. the second coming of the Lord, when he will slay the lawless one with the breath of his mouth. (2 Thessalonians 2:8). To add further confusion, Jan and JD dismiss the biblical distinction between tribulation (thlipsis) and wrath (orge) and treat them as synonyms. In doing so, they continue to advance the seven year tribulation fallacy and the pre-trib rapture. These persistent errors have been corrected many times by competent bible scholars over the years. Wilful ignorance and poor theology are inexcusable in those who presume to hold positions of authority within the church.
But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine. (Titus 2:1).
Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. (James 3:1).
Jack Hibbs' Dishonesty. (29:00) - Both Jan Markell and Jack Hibbs claim that those who are premillennial and post-trib have a "problem" with Israel. Hibbs: "I can tell you right now without meeting them, they have an issue with Israel.." This piece of misinformation is easily debunked. There are a number of significant premillennialists who teach that God will work simultaneously with Israel and the church during the 70th week of Daniel. Two examples are cited below:
Alan Kurschner (Eschatos Ministries) teaches biblical prophecy from a futurist, premillennial, pre-wrath perspective and is pro-Israel.
https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/god-will-work-israel-church-simultaneously-in-future/id521019400?i=1000441901546
Joe Schimmel (Good Fight Ministries) teaches from a futurist, premillennial, post-trib, pro-Israel perspective.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCgDt9Ox3Ww
As a pastor, Jack Hibbs should know the importance of telling the truth. (Ephesians 4:25; Proverbs 12:17). The integrity of a teacher comes into serious question when he is blatantly dishonest with the facts.
Going back to JD Farag. In a previous video with Jan Markell in 2017 "What on Earth is Happening? - he made the insane accusation that anyone who attacks the pre-trib rapture is "satanic". (7:00).
Whether deliberately or not I cannot say, but JD uses the Nazi technique adopted by Adolph Hitler: "..people will believe a big lie sooner than a little one; and if you repeat it frequently enough people will sooner or later believe it." {4}
Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who turn darkness to light and light to darkness, who replace bitter with sweet and sweet with bitter. (Isaiah 5:20).
..while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. (2 Timothy 3:13).
That this is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of the LORD:
Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits: Get you out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us. (Isaiah 30:9-11,15).

Farag says those who attack the pre-trib rapture doctrine are doing the Devil's work? Well, according to this deluded 'teacher' would not this mean all saints in the OT & NT until around 1830 onward have been hitherto deceived in this way? For until about this time not one saint would have countenanced a second coming seven or more years before THE Second Coming! (or OT first coming for that matter!).
ReplyDeleteThey didn't see it taught in God's Book, neither do many in our day, unless you believe the revisionists who twist the writings of the earlier theologians. And even if the teachings of the revisionists were true; their accumulated 'evidence' would be akin to a ploughman using a thread of cotton for a horse to pull his plough!
I have never called anyone "satanic" for believing in pre-trib per se (for I once did). However, I have said many times that "if the pre-trib rapture isn't found in the Bible (exegetically it isn't there), then what else can this teaching be but satanic?"
There is a BIG, BIG, difference between attacking the false pre-trib rapture and the Second Coming of the Lord who IS the believer's "blessed hope" Titus 2:13.
Dispensationalists often say that 1 Thess.4:17 teaches that Paul was expecting an "any moment" rapture. The inspired apostle was speaking corporately;for the rest of the NT Scriptures would never have been written if this were true, for 1 Thessalonians is one of Paul's earliest epistles! What! think on this-a Bible without the Revelation!!!
Some of these 'teachers' can hardly string a sentence together without talking about the rapture?!
God bless.
The pre-trib rapture falls down on various levels; historical, theological and logical. Furthermore, the integrity of many pre-trib teachers is highly questionable.
ReplyDeletePre-trib is a highly irresponsible doctrine based on fantasy, not fact. (1 Timothy 4:1).
Thank you Colin.
God bless.
If only I could be so terse with my words!
ReplyDeleteI like that (for it is true)-"The pre-trib rapture falls down on various levels; historical, theological, and logical."
Truly the pre-trib rapture doctrine is mythological!
God bless.
Alan Kurschner on the extent of their denial:
ReplyDelete"Pretrib Pastor J. D. Farag talking with Jan Markell and Amir Tsarfati said, 'This is not hyperbole. If it were not for the blessed hope of the soon return of Jesus Christ in the [imminent, pretrib] rapture…I would go literally insane. I would lose my mind. [Amir Tsarfati interjects and says, 'I wouldn’t live.'] I would not be able to handle what my eyes see – the evil and the darkness is such that the likes of which we have never seen in human history'"
https://www.alankurschner.com/2019/04/23/pretrib-pastor-says-he-would-go-literally-insane-if-it-were-not-for-the-imminent-rapture-video/
What can a post tribulationist say about such utter nonsense?
ReplyDeleteWorthies such as Augustine, Calvin, Luther, Beza, Knox, to name but a few, never saw a rapture seven years before His Second Coming. Does not this testimony mean anything? These men were no fools-they were eminent students of God's written word, granted they didn't understand everything perfectly (do we, even today?).
These deluded any moment rapture folk must start to realise that Christ's post-tribulational Second Coming is the believers "blessed hope"! That is the Second Advent!
How can they put their minds in the frame of a post tribulationist? I too LONG for Christ's Second Advent! Insanity MOST CERTAINLY WOULD take hold of me if there were no such "blessed hope"!
God bless.
I find it incredible that they will not listen to reason or to history. They refuse to study the scriptures or to test the spirits as we are instructed to do.
ReplyDelete"My Mind Is Made Up. Don’t Confuse Me With the Facts."
God bless.
Jan Markell and her friends are no fools, well spoken with excellent oratorical skills (unlike yours truly!) and have much understanding of what the Bible teaches, of this there is no doubt. Their problem is deception, they are deceived, I hardly need to quote chapter and verse, for we know that the NT is explicit about deception, false teaching and the rise of false prophets in the last days. Do pre-trib teachers sit among the false prophets? certainly they prophesy the Lord can come at ANY MOMENT, which the Bible expressly teaches is not true, for Antichrist must come first then Christ will destroy him by the brightness of His Coming-Gk PRESENCE (2 Thess.2:8).
ReplyDeleteThere is ONE saved people group in all the world (Acts 4:12), ONE church throughout the ages, though we may call them the OT & NT churches, nevertheless saved by Christ's atoning blood alone. The OT dispensation looked forward to the coming Redeemer, we look back to the cross.
I used to believe in pre-trib, not because I understood it's theology (no-one can!), but because it seemed right to me, that God in Christ can Return anytime He chooses, but, His written word says otherwise.
One thing I would say, as a pre-trib believer (until around 8 years ago) I was sort of living in 'fear' as it were, for at that time I genuinely thought the Lord could return at any moment!
As you strongly imply, these teachers have all the information at their fingertips, they have the ability to research the short history of pre-trib, plus the fact that throughout one thousand eight hundred odd years many great theologians and church fathers never once taught it (unless you twist their words!), yet they carry on regardless!
I wonder, if pre-trib, the focal-point of their ministry, to which all doctrines must bend to; was renounced as false (should they come to the knowledge of the truth) would they not have a lot of angry and disappointed followers, maybe losing a great revenue stream?
God bless.
They are articulate Colin.. and large numbers attend Jan Markell's conferences, apparently to get "sound teaching"!!!
ReplyDeleteIt would be very humiliating (and costly) to have to backpedal and admit their error. Better to suffer embarrassment and loss now rather than face the Lord at the great white throne judgement. Revelation 20:11-15. How will they possibly answer for all those deceived by their false teaching? I wonder whether these "teachers" are even saved? There is a desperate need for spiritual discernment in our time.
"And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another." Matthew 24:10.
Better to be humiliated in this age than the next? (Matt.18:8-9).
ReplyDeleteIs it a light thing to teach ANY error? The subject of the Lord's Second Coming is something about which I would not want to propagate falsehoods on, especially in the way Jan Markell and her friends are so doing. His Advent will be a momentous event, a world changing event, and there will be consequences for teaching what God has NOT said. We shall have to give account for "every idle word" Matt.12:36, but how much MORE so when teaching with great zeal and dogmatism the way Markell & co. do? I am reminded of that awful warning in Rev.22:18-19, and this just before He says "Surely I come quickly"!
Dispensationalists would have us believe that the 'fact' the Lord can come at any moment is conducive to holiness of life, but is this so? For who knows when God will take any of us through the portal of death? Peter and Paul both knew they were going to die and not be raptured! (2 Pet.1:14, John 21 18-19, 2 Tim.4:6).
God bless.
I was also thinking of Matthew 18:8-9.
ReplyDeleteI will continue to pray for those ensnared in this deception.
"It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God." Hebrews 10:31.
God bless you Colin.
Treena, I really appreciate you on so many levels. This article is written very well, you are truly blessed as a writer. I'm going to give you my opinion on something. At the beginning of this article it indicates through a survey, that "36% of Protestant pastors in the US believe in a pre-tribulation rapture". I've probably attended about 40-50 protestant and non-denom churches in the USA over the last 50 years and I'll tell you, I do believe they were all dispensationalist/pre trib rapture. What I'm saying is, the 36% survey figure is extremely low by my guess. I'd guess it to be well over 50%-70%. Again, that's just my opinion. I also want to bring your attention to a type-o in this article, you posted Isaiah 5:20 but typed "35:20". Love you Sister in Christ.
ReplyDeleteTwo years later that figure is much higher.
DeleteYou may well be right about the figures for pre-trib churches Unknown. It was the only figure I could find, but as to its accuracy I can't say. Thank you for spotting the typo.. I have corrected it.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Interesting to me how you post-tribers use the same scriptures as pre-tribers; claiming that you understand God’s future behavior concerning his glorious return. If my Doctoral work In theology taught me anything it’s that I am not God and the odds are good that I don’t fully understand prophetic details. Whether I’m pre or post I do t want to answer to God for fighting my brothers and sisters rather than the true enemy (Eph 6:12)
ReplyDeleteJesus will return according to the Father’s will and timeline and not according to pre or post theological constructs.
Amen
DeletePastor Gary,
ReplyDeleteI don't go around calling myself a "post tribber" NOT once, never have. However, THAT label has been foisted upon me for what I believe! I believe that the Second Coming and the rapture, so-called are one and the SAME event.
I am a believer in the Second Coming according to the Scriptures; and as you so accurately say; "Jesus will return according to the Father's will and timeline".
Nevertheless, the pre-tribulation rapture is an unbiblical doctrine that only surfaced less than 200 years ago, and in very murky circumstances! (plus the fact it is not an exegetical doctrine).
God bless.
If we look the verses used to support a secret pre-tribulation rapture, the ones used most often are 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17:
ReplyDelete"For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words."
There are several things in these verses that are immediately obvious. First is the issue of the trumpet. There is nothing secret about an angelic trumpet blast. An angelic trumpet is going to be heard worldwide, not merely by a few. (Revelation 1:7)
Secondly, the phrase "the dead in Christ will rise first". When do the dead in Christ rise? Scripture in multiple places states the dead in Christ will rise on the Last Day, not in a secret rapture before Christ returns for His actual second coming (only future return).
In order for the dead to rise first, it must, indeed, be the Last Day, not a secret rapture. A key verse in this regard of any believer alive at the time of the Second Coming being taken up BEFORE the dead in Christ is 1 Thessalonians 4:15
"For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep."
I believe Christians alive at the time of the tribulation will not escape based on the following verses:
Scripture verses supporting the faithful enduring the Antichrist, tribulation, and last days:
Matthew 24:9-14 (Christians endure the tribulation)
Matthew 24:29-31 (Jesus returns after the tribulation)
2 Thessalonians 2 (Entire chapter)
1 Corinthians 15:50-52 (Paul echoing Jesus from Matthew)
Mark 13:24-27 (Jesus returns after the tribulation)
Revelation 1:7 (When Jesus returns, every eye shall see Him)
Revelation 7:14 (Discusses martyrs who came out of the tribulation)
Revelation 13:7 (Antichrist wages war against the holy ones)
Sadly, where I live, most congregations buy into the rapture nonsense. There is a reformed Presbyterian church near me, but I would have to look further into their theology. I'm a former Lutheran married to a former Catholic looking for a great place to grow in Christ without the nasty man-made theology.
Thank you for your comment Anonymous. I suggest you do thorough study of Calvinism/Reformed theology. I recommend Joe Schimmel on this subject. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sO7hOfXii1o&t=761s
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Can someone explain how you can be Pro Life but not wear a mask to prevent the spread of the Corona Virus which is a pandemic that can contribute to the demise of people who have pre existing conditions. Jack Hibbs mixes Bible and Politics as if Jesus is not enough to save and transform a lost and dying world and needs the help of ungodly Trump! Sad
ReplyDeleteYou speak the truth about Jack Hibbs. My concern, as one who lives in Chino Hills, is that Calvary Chapel is too focused on the political opinions of its pastor and not enough on the teachings of Christ. Sure, I enjoy a good political discussion, but there's a bit more to Christian life than demonizing others so frequently.
ReplyDeleteAs for the pandemic, let me be plain and clear -- covid is a serious virus. Advocating, as Jack does, that unmasked and often unvaccinated congregants squeeze together(during a serious upswing in infection) in the pews is a recipe for spreading illness. This is just wrong. We are commissioned by Christ to love our neighbors, not infect them! Getting the vaccine, which is very effective and overall very safe, will help protect one another so that we can worship together safely. But this line of thought is labeled as heresy by many of his congregants. The language used to attack me and my wife, who love Christ and are not shy about pointing out poor logic or the evil influence of conspiracy theories, from fellow Christians at that church cannot be repeated here. It's that vile. And one look at the angry, mean and sometimes false Tweets and social media rhetoric (Mr. Hibbs was at the mob attack in DC on Jan 6 and claims BLM attacked the Capitol, for exampke) of Mr. Hibbs tells me where that nastiness comes from. The pulpit.
I never thought I would point a finger at an ordained minister and say, "I rebuke you in the name of the Lord. Repent!" but I am saying just that.
I pray, sincerely, for the physical well-being of my community and spiritual renewal at Calvary. It's simply off track. If you attend Calvary Chapel of Chino Hills, I encourage you to consider other Christ-centered churches in Chino and Chino Hills that have genuinely loving leadership. There are many good ones.
Seek and you shall find.
Having done some research on the subject, I am not convinced that the vaccine is safe. Having said that, I respect the free choice of anyone who has taken the vaccine. My concern is that this will be a point of division, not only in society in general, but amongst Christians.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise.
