JAMES WHITE'S POSTMILLENNIAL FALLACY

Sermon: My Journey to Hope for the Future - YouTube

Last year, Reformed Baptist Pastor James White (director of Alpha and Omega Ministries) announced that after many years of being a "pan-millennial" (it will all pan out in the end), he has finally opted to support the postmillennial eschatological position.

There are essentially four eschatological views: Historic Premillennialism, Dispensational Premillennialism, Amillennialism, and Postmillennialism. The summary of each of these positions below is very brief and variations within them are not included.

Historic premillennialism is so called because it was the view articulated by the early church fathers including Irenaeus, Papias, Justin Martyr, Tertullian and Hippolytus. Historic premillennialism (known in the early church as chiliasm) is the literal futuristic view that the second coming of Jesus Christ will occur prior to the thousand-year reign subsequent to the great apostasy. Historic premillennialists deny a pre-tribulation rapture and anticipate that the church will go through the great tribulation. (2 Thessalonians 2:3; Matthew 24:3-21).

Dispensational premillennialism is the view developed by John Nelson Darby and popularized by CI Scofield in the 19th century. This view supports a literal thousand year reign of Jesus Christ after an alleged "seven year tribulation". Dispensational premillennialists make a rigid distinction between Israel and the church, maintaining that God does not work with the Church and Israel at the same time. There are many exegetical problems associated with this view, not least, the popular, but problematic, pre-tribulation rapture theory.

Amillennialism (non-millennial) is the view that the millennium and the book of Revelation are allegorical.

Postmillennialism is the view that Jesus Christ will return at the end of an indefinite period of time (the millennium) after the majority of the world has been converted to Christianity. Reformed theologian, Kenneth L Gentry Jr gives a brief summary of modern Reformed postmillennialism below:

"Postmillennialism holds that the Lord Jesus Christ established his kingdom on earth in the first century through his preaching and redemptive work. Since then he has continued to equip his Church with the gospel, empower her by his Spirit, and charge her with the Great Commission to disciple all nations. Postmillennialism expects that eventually the vast majority of men living will be saved. Increasing gospel success will gradually produce a time in history prior to Christ’s return in which faith, righteousness, peace, and prosperity will prevail in the affairs of men and of nations. After an extensive era of such conditions, the Lord will return visibly, bodily, and gloriously, to end history. Associated with his return will be the general resurrection and the final judgment after which the eternal order follows. Because of its worldwide historical implications, postmillennialism generates an holistic worldview touching on all areas of life.." {1}

The aim of this post is to critique the postmillennial view as articulated by James White in the above sermon livestreamed by Apologia Studios on the 14th February 2021.

It doesn't take James White very long to dismiss what he refers to as "beasts in Revelation" and "obscure passages in Daniel". Like many of us, James White admits to having been negatively impacted by "Left Behind" pre-trib dispensational premillennialism as touted by Hal Lindsey and Tim LaHaye. While I agree that it is advisable to reject the eisegetical teachings of the pre-trib camp, it would be catastrophic to dismiss explicit eschatological material in the book of Revelation and related Old Testament passages. According to pre-trib scholar Arnold Fruchtenbaum, there are over five hundred references to the Old Testament in the Book of Revelation: "Some of these references back to the Old Testament do speak of the very same thing as the Revelation. However, in others, the Revelation merely borrows a phrase or motif for the purpose of developing a new area. This distinction should be kept in mind in the study of those Old Testament references." {2}

The Gnostic Roots of Postmillennialism

In common with Calvinism, the roots of postmillennialism go back to 4th century philosopher, Augustine of Hippo. Augustine infused Christian doctrine with Neoplatonism and was the primary catalyst that brought about a shift in thinking about the literal one thousand year view of the millennium in the west. Most historians agree that Augustine was amillennial, as was Jerome, his counterpart in the Eastern Orthodox Church. In Augustine's City of God, an earthly or physical millennial kingdom is repeatedly dismissed. {3}In the late 2nd century, a literal thousand years was challenged by Origen and Clement of Alexandria who favoured allegorical biblical interpretations.

The first person to articulate a definitive postmillennial view was Church of England minister, Daniel Whitby (1638-1726).

Clarence Larkin: "... a new interpretation of the Millennial Reign of Christ was demanded. This interpretation was furnished by the Rev. Daniel Whitby (1638–1726), a clergyman of the Church of England, who claimed that in reading the promises made to the Jews in the Old Testament of their restoration as a nation, and the re-establishment of the Throne of David, he was led to see that these promises were spiritual and applied to the Church. This view he called a 'New Hypothesis.'
His 'New Hypothesis' was that by the preaching of the Gospel Mohammedanism would be overthrown, the Jews converted, the Papal Church with the Pope (Antichrist) would be destroyed, and there would follow a 1000 years of righteousness and peace known as the Millennium; at the close of which there would be a short period of Apostasy, ending in the return of Christ."
{4}

A postmillennial (allegorical) interpretation of Revelation 20:1-10 is highly problematic for at least four reasons.

1. Postmillennialism does not align with an exegetical reading of Revelation 20:1-10. There is no indication in the book of Revelation that the events described are allegorical. Revelation 1:1 describes "what must (dei - necessarily) soon come to pass". As such we must take the events literally in order to follow accepted principles of sound exegesis.
2. The historic premillennial view was the predominant view of the early church fathers e.g. Irenaeus, Papias, Justin Martyr, Tertullian and Hippolytus. We therefore have early church tradition as a powerful witness attesting to historic premillennialism.
3. Postmillennialism has its roots in Gnosticism.
4. The Enlightenment and the optimism of the 18th century "the golden age of theodicies". More information on this subject can be found at: FULL_TEXT.PDF (manchester.ac.uk)

Revelation discloses definitively what must literally soon (tachos - speedily) come to pass.

This is the revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants what must soon come to pass. He made it known by sending His angel to His servant John, who testifies to everything he saw. This is the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ. Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear and obey what is written in it, because the time is near. (Revelation 1:1-3 cf. Daniel 12:1-13).

The book of Revelation gives a stern warning not to change (add or subtract) any part of its contents. (Revelation 22:19-20). I don't know what the consequences are for those who either allegorize or reject this book completely!

Postmillennials have made a disastrous false assumption i.e. that the evangelization of the world leads progressively into the millennium and that the majority of people will be saved. However, the scriptures are clear that the evangelization of the world is a prerequisite to God's judgement on the wicked (the Day of the Lord), followed by Christ's physical return when His kingdom will be established on earth as it is in heaven. (Matthew 6:10). And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. (Matthew 24:14). The evangelization of the world is finally fulfilled by the first of the three angels in Revelation 14:6-9.

Then I saw another angel flying directly overhead, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people.
And he said with a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come, and worship him who made heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water.” (Revelation 14:6-7).

The worldwide proclamation of the gospel by the first angel is followed by a second proclamation, the impending doom of Babylon (second angel); and a third proclamation, the specific warning not to take the mark of the beast (third angel). (Revelation 14:9-11). In light of such explicit warnings, postmillennialism is left floundering.

In this video James White concentrates the entirety of his efforts on Psalm 2, Psalm 110, Isaiah 42:1-4 and 1 Corinthians 15:20-27. These passages are eschatological, but they do not support postmillennialism. In common with the pre-trib rapture theory, not one verse of scripture supports the postmillennial view.

James White's worldly emotional appeal

James White spends some time describing the current global situation as "..a rapid major movement of the entire globe toward a secular anti-Christian mindset and governmental system". He asks: "What is the intention of the church in light of advancing global secular totalitarianism?" I share his concerns about advancing global totalitarianism. However, current events align with the scriptures i.e. things will get worse and worse rather than better. There is no indication in the scriptures that the world will improve, rather the reverse is indicated. (Matthew 24:37; Luke 17: 22 -37; 2 Timothy 3:13; 1 John 2:17).

James White's concerns for our progeny (the future of our children and future generations) appears to be based on an emotional reaction based on human concerns rather than the concerns of God. (Mark 8:33). As believers, our optimism must be founded on the coming of Jesus Christ, our blessed hope, NOT on some unscriptural assumption that the world will eventually be evangelized and will improve. ..waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, (Titus 2:13).

Look up - or wait for the world to improve?

In order to be postmillennial you must reject the book of Revelation, Daniel and associated scriptures. You must also reject the explicit warnings of Jesus Christ concerning the end of the age in the Olivet Discourse. (Matthew 24:3).

So when you see standing in the holy place ‘the abomination of desolation,’ described by the prophet Daniel (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let no one on the housetop come down to retrieve anything from his house. And let no one in the field return for his cloak.(Matthew 24:15-18).

Then he said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven. But before all this they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors for my name’s sake. This will be your opportunity to bear witness. Settle it therefore in your minds not to meditate beforehand how to answer, for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict. You will be delivered up even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and some of you they will put to death. You will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But not a hair of your head will perish. By your endurance you will gain your lives.. (Luke 21:10-19).

"And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves, people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world. For the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” (Luke 21:25-28 cf.
Matthew 24:29; Mark 13:24; Acts 2:20; Revelation 6:12-13, Isaiah 13:10; Joel 2:31).

For all of James White's protestations that he is scriptural, his soteriology (Calvinism) and eschatology (postmillennialism) are based on Gnosticism and do not reflect either the scriptures or early church tradition.

They must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for shameful gain what they ought not to teach. (Titus 1:11).

DALTON THOMAS # JOEL RICHARDSON: SEVENTH TRUMPET DISTORTION AND MORAL CORRUPTION

The Greatest Moment in Human History: Maranatha Global Bible Study 31 - YouTube

There has been a fairly long break since Dalton Thomas' and Joel Richardson's last bible study. I was hoping that this was due to the fact that they saw the need to make some radical adjustments to their skewed views. I also wondered whether they had been honest enough to question their legitimacy as bible teachers ~ but apparently not. I will go into this in more detail at the end of this post.

In my previous post I questioned Dalton Thomas' distortion of the book of Revelation and his warped teaching regarding the fifth and sixth trumpets (the first two woes) in Revelation chapter 9. I observed that he had invented his own bizarre scenario for the first six trumpet judgements. {1} The above episode reveals a number of further problems relating to Dalton Thomas' eschatology, in particular his distorted "seventh trumpet" rapture view.

The belief that the "last trumpet" in 1 Corinthians 15:51-52 is the seventh trumpet in the book of Revelation is highly problematic.

Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. (1 Corinthians 15:51-52).

For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. (1 Thessalonians 4:16).

Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.” (Revelation 11:15).

Dalton Thomas' theory does not match the context or the chronology of the book of Revelation.

Dalton Thomas: "There is a 'great trumpet' described.. Isaiah 26 says that right before a great wedding feast in Zion there is going to be a great trumpet blast." There is no "great trumpet" in Isaiah 26. The verse he refers to is Isaiah 27:13 which applies to the return of the Israelites from Egypt and Assyria. Isaiah 26:19-21 confirms that God's wrath follows the resurrection of the dead i.e. the prewrath position.

Dalton Thomas begins with the presumption that Paul's "last trumpet" coincides with the seventh trumpet of Revelation. He resorts to eisegesis in order to justify his presupposition. One problem with this view is that Paul wrote 1 Corinthians in about 53–54AD and John wrote the book of Revelation in about 96AD, leaving a gap of about forty years between the books. As such Paul was probably unaware of the seventh trumpet of Revelation 11:15 (cf. Revelation 8:2-6,12; 9:1,13; 10:7). Dalton Thomas claims that this is a "goofy argument". The forty year gap between Paul and John would not be a convincing argument in isolation, but this is only one aspect of the problematic seventh trumpet/post-trib rapture view. Dalton Thomas fails to grasp the concept that Paul was alluding to the imagery of the shofar in the Old Testament rather than the seventh trumpet of Revelation 11:15. This explanation fits the context and is more compelling since the shofar was sounded in order to summon the assembly. (Exodus 20:18Psalm 81:3Isaiah 18:3Isaiah 27:13).

Dalton Thomas appears to be teaching a distorted version the classical post-trib rapture view. This view generally promotes the idea that the trumpets and bowls correspond with one another, and that the sixth seal, the seventh trumpet and the seventh bowl are the same events. However, there is convincing evidence that the seals, the trumpets and bowls in the book of Revelation are sequential. In a general sense, the rise in the intensity of judgements suggests a sequential rather than a simultaneous view. More specifically, when the fourth seal is broken, Death and Hades are given power over one fourth of the earth (Revelation 6:8). However one third of the earth is the specific figure relating to the first four trumpets. (Revelation 8:7, 9,10-12, 9:15). The intensity of the judgements culminate with the seven bowls ~ for with them the wrath of God is finished. (Revelation 15:1). The trumpet and bowl judgements are not a close enough match to draw the conclusion that exactly the same events are being described. For instance, at the fourth trumpet the sun and moon are struck causing a reduction of the light by one third (Revelation 8:12), whereas when the fourth angel pours out his bowl on the sun, it is allowed to scorch people with fire. (Revelation 16:8). The river Euphrates is mentioned in the sixth trumpet and the sixth bowl, but their purpose is totally different. (Revelation 9:13-14; 6:12). Furthermore there are contextual considerations that Dalton Thomas ignores. For instance, Revelation 7:1-8 describes the sealing of the 144000 Jews which necessarily precedes the fifth trumpet judgement of Revelation 9:4. The sealing of the 144,00 Jews in Revelation 7:1-8 takes place during an interlude between the sixth and seventh seals, but its relationship to the seals and the chronology of the events is indisputable. Similarly Revelation 16:2 (the mark of the beast) presupposes Revelation 13:16-18. This event occurs between the conclusion of the trumpets and the beginning of the bowls.

The context of the trumpets in Revelation is specific in that they implement the day of the Lord i.e. the wrath of God following the breaking of the seventh seal. (Revelation 8 ff.). 1 Corinthians 15:52 and 1 Thessalonians 4:16 refer exclusively to the rapture, there is no reference whatsoever to judgement/wrath in these passages.

Dalton Thomas explains the forty year gap between Paul and John as "progressive prophecy continuity". Dalton Thomas: "There are not multiple 'last trumpets', the seventh trumpet is the last trumpet."  This naïve viewpoint fails to take account of the complexities of the subject and the unresolvable problems related to the seventh trumpet argument. If we take the trouble to examine the scriptures, we discover that the rapture precedes the seven trumpets and occurs immediately after the tribulation:

Immediately after the tribulation of those days: ‘The sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and all the tribes of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory. And He will send out His angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other. (Matthew 24:29-31 cf. Revelation 6:12-17).

The above event describes the sixth seal cosmic disturbances. Chronologically the trumpet judgements follow the opening of the seventh seal. (Revelation 6:12-17).

When the Lamb opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. Then I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them... Now the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared to blow them.. (Revelation 8:,1,2,6).

In Revelation 7:9 there is a great multitude that no one could number before God's throne clothed in white robes. This indicates that the number of the resurrected saints is now complete and that the rapture has occurred.

These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. (Revelation 7:14). In Revelation 6:11 the martyrs are given white robes and are told to wait a little longer. In Revelation 7:9 the great multitude are clothed in white robes:

Then they were each given a white robe and told to rest a little longer, until the number of their fellow servants and their brothers should be complete, who were to be killed as they themselves had been. (Revelation 6:11).

After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands.. (Revelation 7:9).

One has to throw out all pretense of sound hermeneutic in order to justify the Revelation 11:15 seventh trumpet rapture view. Despite this, a number of post-trib rapture teachers are determined to hold fast to their "seventh trumpet". Dalton Thomas refutes the pre-trib rapture view, but problematically his own view is appallingly deficient. This effectively generates further confusion concerning the timing of the rapture and defeats his alleged object of providing clarification.

Alan Kurschner: "..the 'seventh trumpet is when the rapture occurs' interpretation is a skewing domino affect where posttribulation interpreters get almost everything wrong on their interpretation of the book of Revelation." {2}

Dalton Thomas' parting shot - Do not study

"This is how revelation is given, it is not by studying -- you can study all day long and be a demon. Studying doesn't do anything. Studying is not the same as hunger and humility.. Lots of people study for other motivations.. to get certain things and to be something else.. Hunger and humility is the only way.."

I would not argue that hunger and humility are not essential ingredients in order to grow in the Lord. However by denouncing study, Dalton Thomas appears to actively discourage anyone who would test his skewed teaching against the scriptures.

For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. (2 Peter 1:5-8).

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; (Hosea 4:6).

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15).  The KJV has ~ "Study to show yourself approved.."

Strong's: "From spoude; to use speed, i.e. To make effort, be prompt or earnest -- do (give) diligence, be diligent (forward), endeavour, labour, study." {3}

In isolation "knowledge puffs up". (1 Corinthians 8:1). However, the notion that we do not need to study the scriptures is to resort to reductio ad absurdum. We do need to study in order to be properly equipped both to understand the scriptures and to test the spirits. (1 John 4:1; Acts 17:11). I suggest that Dalton Thomas' examines his own motivations for saying such a foolish thing.

Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. (James 3:1).

Both lifestyle and doctrine are essential requirements for anyone purporting to be an elder or a teacher. (1 Timothy 4:16).

Dalton Thomas does not fulfil the scriptural requirements of a teacher/elder due to his extra marital affair with a single woman on the team of FAI under his leadership. I will not go into details here, but I advise anyone who follows FAI to read the following article by Mike Reynolds: mikereynolds.org The scriptures state that elders should be above reproach. (Titus 1:5-9). Dalton Thomas markets himself as something of an expert, but much of his teaching is based on his own opinions and forced eisegesis, this is what the bible calls "empty talk". (Titus 1:10; Proverbs 18:2; 2 Timothy 1:13). In addition, he has known associations with IHOP, a questionable ministry associated with the New Apostolic Reformation. The above factors constitute more than enough evidence for believers to mark and avoid this man. (Romans 6:17).

I know nothing about Joel Richardson's personal morality, but I do know that a "prophetic endorsement" by "Latter Rain" false prophet Paul Cain was the catalyst that kick started his "ministry". Paul Cain's lifestyle was tarnished by spiritual deception, homosexuality and alcoholism. (Galatians 5:19-21). A "prophetic endorsement" from Paul Cain is a contraindication, not a recommendation ~ and yet Joel Richardson actually boasts about it! {4} Joel Richardson also has associations with TBN and other questionable neo-charismatic "ministries". Richardson is the only person in "ministry" I know of that goes under a pseudonym. Apparently this is because he believes that his family are at risk from harm from Islamic activists due to his questionable Islamic Antichrist theory. If his "ministry" really is legitimate, what would prevent him trusting the Lord regarding possible outcomes? (Psalm 118:6).

The eschatology of both Joel Richardson and Dalton Thomas is very twisted. I would advise believers to test the spirits and avoid these two empty talkers. (Titus 1:10; 1 John 4:1; Acts 17:11 cf. Romans 16:17-18).

JOE SCHIMMEL: TERTULLIAN VICTORINUS AND TRIBULATION

 (5) Rev Series: What, When and How Long is the Day of the Lord?- Part 2 - YouTube

Below are some further thoughts on Joe's sermon on The Day of the Lord.

Joe Schimmel really should give up the habit of quoting certain unreliable Church Fathers in order to promote the post-trib rapture. The early Church Fathers are a very useful source in order to prove that the church will face the Antichrist, but they do not specify when precisely the rapture will occur. Joe's view that the sixth seal, the seventh trumpet and the seventh bowl are simultaneous events is pure eisegesis. There is no evidence whatsoever that this is the case. Joe's attempt to prove that the early Church Fathers believed in what he refers to as the "classical historical premillennial rapture view" (i.e. post-trib), is problematic. Like the mid-trib view, post-trib is fast becoming obsolete due to the research of modern prewrath scholars whose questions post-trib teachers are unable to answer. Those of us who are interested in communicating in truths do not need to resort to ancient unreliable sources in order to demonstrate the prewrath position. (2 Timothy 3:16). I will apply the common criticism that is usually levelled against the pre-trib camp: There is not one single verse of scripture that supports the post-trib view.

Why does Joe quote Victorinus, a very confused so called "Church Father" who no-one of any note regards as reliable? In this particular video, Joe quotes Tertullian's reference to "the last day". We might assume that compared with Victorinus, Tertullian was sound in his faith. The answer is yes and no. Tertullian practiced extreme asceticism and some time before 210 AD he became a Montanist. In my view, his writings are protracted and tedious, and there are some issues with his theology.

Tertullian's Skewed Rapture View (?)

Tertullian: "..before we put off the garment of the flesh, we wish to be clothed with the celestial glory of immortality. Now the privilege of this favour awaits those who shall at the coming of the Lord be found in the flesh, and who shall, owing to the oppressions of the time of Antichrist, deserve by an instantaneous death, which is accomplished by a sudden change, to become qualified to join the rising saints; as he writes to the Thessalonians: For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: then we too shall ourselves be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord." {1}

If I have understood Tertullian correctly, he taught that those Christians who are alive at the Parousia will die instantaneously in order to qualify to meet the Lord in the air. If this is correct then he contradicts 1 Thessalonians 4:17 and 1 Corinthians 15:51.

Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. (1 Corinthians 15:51-52).

Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. (1 Thessalonians 4:17).

What did Tertullian mean by "the last day"?

Tertullian:  "..our prayers are directed towards the end of this world, to the passing away thereof at the great day of the Lord — of His wrath and vengeance — the last day, which is hidden (from all), and known to none but the Father, although announced beforehand by signs and wonders, and the dissolution of the elements, and the conflicts of nations."  {1}

And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that I shall lose none of those He has given Me, but raise them up at the last day. For it is My Father’s will that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.” (John 6:39-40, 44, 54 cf. John 11:24).

The phrase "the last day" only occurs in John. Elsewhere it is called "the day of the Lord", "the great day", "the day of the Lord's wrath &c. These slightly different nuances used by different authors all describe "the day of the Lord" in some sense.

Post-trib writers define the tribulation period in a generic sense as the entire present age, or more specifically all the events leading up to Armageddon. However the scriptures make a definite distinction between tribulation and wrath. (Matthew 24:29). Joe's mindset that "the day of the Lord's wrath" must be a literal twenty-four hour period of time is an assumption. The prewrath position is that the church age comes to an end on "the last day" i.e. the rapture. ..concerning that day and hour no one knows (Matthew 24:26-34). On the last day a shift occurs and events move from tribulation ~ to resurrection (rapture) ~ to the onset of God's wrath. In other words, "the day of God's wrath" is an ongoing event. It appears that "the day of the Lord" continues in some sense throughout the millennial period.

Joe's persistence in continuing to refer to the entire 70th week of Daniel as "the tribulation" is unacceptable. In my view this is the thin end of the wedge. Be careful! This is how error and false teaching creeps in. We don't need to be especially "technical" to divide the 70th week into the beginning of birth pains (Matthew 24:8), and the tribulation, we simply need to be scriptural! The tribulation is always associated with the abomination of desolation event at the mid point of Daniel's 70th week. (Matthew 24:15-28; Daniel 9:27).

For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be. (Matthew 24:9,21 cf. Daniel 9:27).

Joe makes much of "rightly dividing the Word of truth" in this video. (2 Timothy 2:15). This is something we all need to take to heart.

JOE SCHIMMEL: THE DAY OF THE LORD?

Wednesday Night BIble Study - YouTube

How long is the Day of the Lord?

Joe Schimmel has postponed his prewrath/post-trib rapture comparison. I think this is a good thing because (hopefully) it will give him time to consider the subject in more depth.

Joe qualifies the post-trib view by calling it "the classical historical premillennial view". This is an assumption. There is no evidence that early church specified the rapture in "classical" post-trib terms. I don't want to be ungracious to Joe, but I feel that giving credit to Victorinus' recapitulation view of the bowl judgements is disingenuous. Victorinus was an utterly unreliable and confused third century church father. I have expanded my original post on this subject. {1}

I do not consider the differences between prewrath and post-trib to be a salvation issue per se. However, the subject is critical because damage and confusion arises from wrong teaching, and this in turn gives ammunition to the pre-trib camp and other false views. In my experience one error inevitably leads to further errors.

Joe Schimmel: "Our prewrath brethren believe that the tribulation ends with the sixth seal.. they believe that the trumpets and the bowls are not really part of the tribulation period but God's wrath, and that we are out right before that... What they are calling the day of the Lord is the tribulation still.. prewrath is not truly post-trib because what they call the day of the Lord is the tribulation period." {2}

Above: Joe teaches that the tribulation will continue right up until the battle of Armageddon when Jesus returns to earth with the saints. However the evidence that the tribulation will end before the wrath of God is poured out, is, in my view, overwhelming.

According to Joe, the sixth seal in Revelation 6:15-17 is a picture of the very end. He also equates Matthew 24:39-30 with Armageddon (Revelation 19). Apart from the fact that Matthew 24 does not describe the battle scene of Revelation 19, we have to ignore the stated chronology of the trumpets and bowls that indicate a clear sequence of events.

Revelation 6:12-14 draws from the celestial portents described in Joel 2:31.

The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes. (Joel 2:31).

Immediately after the tribulation of those days: ‘The sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And He will send out His angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other. (Matthew 24:29-31).

The great tribulation is cut short and is followed by the gathering of the elect (the rapture). (Matthew 24:22,31).

The Day of the Lord.. one literal day?

And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that I shall lose none of those He has given Me, but raise them up at the last day. For it is My Father’s will that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.” (John 6:39-40, 44, 54 cf. John 11:24). The phrase "the last day" only occurs in John. Elsewhere it is called "the day of the Lord", "the great day" &c.

Clearly "the last day" is resurrection language and refers to the rapture. The prewrath position is that the church age comes to an end on "the last day" i.e. the rapture. Subsequently a shift occurs and events move from tribulation ~ to resurrection ~ to the onset of God's wrath. In other words, "the day of the Lord" is an ongoing event, it does not suddenly end at the rapture. As Joe says, there is evidence that the day of the Lord continues through the millennial period.

We need to be wary about translating "yom" out of context as a single day. Rodney Whitefield: "Yom relates to the concept of time. Yom is not just for day, days, but for time in general. How yom is translated depends on the context of its use with other words in the sentence around it, using hermeneutics." {3}

The following video from Alan Kurschner is important for post-trib believers to consider:

JOE SCHIMMEL: PREWRATH VERSUS POST-TRIB RAPTURE VIEWS

(2) Wednesday Night Bible Study - YouTube

Next Wednesday Joe Schimmel will contrast the prewrath and post-trib rapture views in 'The Day of the Lord - Part 2'.

Joe Schimmel: "Our prewrath brethren believe that the tribulation ends with the sixth seal.. they believe that the trumpets and the bowls are not really part of the tribulation period but God's wrath, and that we are out right before that... What they are calling the day of the Lord is the tribulation still.. prewrath is not truly post-trib because what they call the day of the Lord is the tribulation period."

It will be interesting to see how Joe Schimmel will reconcile his views with Matthew 24:29-31 and Revelation 6:12-17. Matthew 24:29 specifically states that the sixth seal cosmic disturbances occur immediately after the tribulation. I think next weeks video will be important for believers to consider.

Immediately after the tribulation of those days: ‘The sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.' At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and all the tribes of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory. And He will send out His angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other. (Matthew 24:29-31).

And when I saw the Lamb open the sixth seal, there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black like sackcloth of goat hair, and the whole moon turned blood red, and the stars of the sky fell to the earth like unripe figs dropping from a tree shaken by a great wind. The sky receded like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved from its place. Then the kings of the earth, the nobles, the commanders, the rich, the mighty, and every slave and free man hid in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains. And they said to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of the One seated on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb. For the great day of Their wrath has come, and who is able to withstand it?” (Revelation 6:12-17).

JOE SCHIMMEL'S TRIBULATION DISTORTIONS

What, When and How Long is the Day of the Lord?- Part 1
(23) Wednesday Night BIble Study - YouTube

I have to point out with a heavy heart that Joe Schimmel's latest message about the post-trib rapture was one of the most distorted messages I have ever heard. Why he feels that he has to define the entire 70th week of Daniel as "the tribulation" is beyond me, unless it is to appease the pre-trib camp. The bible should define our terms, not the erroneous views of those who distort the scriptures.

Bible teachers need to be very clear.. the first half of the 70th week is not the tribulation. It is critical that God's Word is not misrepresented. (Proverbs 30:6; Revelation 22:18).

Not one single verse of scripture backs up the seven year tribulation fallacy.

The scriptures tell us repeatedly, in no uncertain terms, that the great tribulation will last for 3.5 years:

Daniel 7:25 He (the Antichrist) shall speak words against the Most High, and shall wear out the saints of the Most High, and shall think to change the times and the law; and they shall be given into his hand for a time, times, and half a time. (3.5 years).
Revelation 11:2 ..but do not measure the court outside the temple; leave that out, for it is given over to the nations, and they will trample the holy city for forty-two months.
Revelation 13:5 And the beast was given a mouth uttering haughty and blasphemous words, and it was allowed to exercise authority for forty-two months.
Revelation 12:5-6 ..and the woman (Israel) fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, in which she is to be nourished for 1,260 days.
This period coincides with what is also known as "Jacob's Trouble". (Daniel 12:1, Jeremiah 30:7).
Matthew 24:15-21 ..when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let the one who is on the housetop not go down to take what is in his house, and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak. And alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a Sabbath. For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be.
Daniel 9:27 And he shall make a strong covenant with many for one week, and for half of the week he shall put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall come one who makes desolate, until the decreed end is poured out on the desolator.” The abomination of desolation will occur halfway through the final seven year period, often referred to as Daniel’s 70th week. {1}

Although he didn't name him, for the second time, Joe Schimmel referred to early "church father" Victorinus as his only source in order to substantiate his recapitulation view regarding the sixth seal, the seventh trumpet and the seventh bowl. If anyone will take the time to read Victorinus they will discover that his theology is deeply flawed. Joe Schimmel really should know better!

A Sample of Victorinus' Flawed (allegorical) Theology:

And the sun became black as sackcloth of hair. The sun becomes as sackcloth; that is, the brightness of doctrine will be obscured by unbelievers.

And the entire moon became as bloodBy the moon of blood is set forth the Church of the saints as pouring out her blood for Christ.

And the stars fell to the earth. The falling of the stars are the faithful who are troubled for Christ's sake.

Even as a fig-tree casts her untimely figs. The fig-tree, when shaken, loses its untimely figs — when men are separated from the Church by persecution.

And the heaven withdrew as a scroll that is rolled up. For the heaven to be rolled away, that is, that the Church shall be taken away. {2}

Joe Schimmel is doing no-one any favours with his continued, and I might say, willful distortion of the scriptures. He would do better not to teach on this subject at all rather than give such a warped message based on eisegesis. The various problems associated with the post-trib rapture have been pointed out to Joe Schimmel and his team on a number of occasions. They have yet to address these issues. Joe Schimmel would do far better to go back to the scriptures and take the time to reconsider his position. If I remember correctly, his recapitulation view is based on a (supposed) revelation he received from the Lord in his early days as a Christian. He was obviously genuinely convinced by this revelation, but I say, does it correspond with the scriptures? (1 John 4:1).

BILL SALUS: IS PSALM 83 PROPHETIC?

Bill Salus is a well known an author and speaker on the subject of end time bible prophecy. In particular he is the originator of the proposed eschatological fulfilment of Psalm 83.

Psalm 83 is the last of twelve psalms attributed to Asaph the son of Berachiah. (Psalms 50, 73–83). Asaph was a seer and a significant figure in the Old Testament. He was one of three Levites King David chose to minister before the dwelling place of the tabernacle of the congregation with singing and public worship. (1 Chronicles 6:31-32). This took place at the tent that David had erected on Mount Zion to house the ark of the covenant where it rested until Solomon built the temple in Jerusalem. Asaph's all important pedigree is recorded in 1 Chronicles 6:39-48.

Based on Psalm 83, Salus forecasts an imminent Arab-Israeli conflict involving the modern day equivalent of the ten nations in verses 6-8. Salus argues that since none of Israel's immediate neighbours are mentioned in Ezekiel 38:1-6, a prior conflict must occur which will eliminate their near neighbours as a precursor to the Ezekiel 38-39 events. He speculates that the so called "prophesied war" of the Arab nations against Israel will occur prior to the 70th week of Daniel. According to Salus, Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) will completely annihilate their ancient enemies and will annex their lands. Salus continues to speculate that following the annihilation of their enemies, Israel's mindset will be one of ease and confidence, leaving them ripe for the Ezekiel 38 Gog/Magog attack:

I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates.. (Ezekiel 38:11 cf. Zechariah 2:4-5).

* I am not dogmatic, but I tend to think that the Gog/Magog war will occur at the end of the millennium. The description of the attack by Gog and Magog in Revelation 20:9 corresponds to Ezekiel 38:11.

The ten nation confederacy of Psalm 83 comprised:   ..the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, Moab the Hagrites, Gebal, Ammon, Amalek, Philistia, Tyre and Assyria. (Psalm 83:6-8)

According to Salus: “The modern equivalents of the Psalm 83 confederates are: tents of Edom (Palestinian Refugees and Southern Jordanians), Ishmaelites (Saudi Arabians), Moab (Palestinian Refugees and Central Jordanians), Hagrite^ (Egyptians), Gebal (Northern Lebanese), Ammon (Palestinian Refugees and Northern Jordanians), Amalek (Arabs South of Israel), Philistia (Palestinian Refugees and Hamas of the Gaza Strip), inhabitants of Tyre (Hezbollah and Southern Lebanese), Assyria (Syrians and perhaps Northern Iraqi’s), and the children of Lot (Moab and Ammon above). {1}

Salus erroneously identifies the Hagrites as Egypt due to their progenitor, Hagar, the Egyptian maidservant of Sarah. (Genesis 16:1; 21:9-10). In fact, the Hagrite clans were associated with the Ishmaelites and they inhabited the regions of Jetur, Naphish and Nodab, east of Gilead. (1 Chronicles 5:10). {2}

Salus identification of the the tents of Edom as Palestinian refugees and Central Jordanians is unconvincing. According to various commentaries, some of these people, particularly the Ishmaelites, were nomadic and dwelt in tents. Albert Barnes: "..the Edomites were a people of fixed boundaries, who in early periods, like most ancient people, doubtless dwelt in tents." {3}

Further considerations

The king of the north (the Antichrist) versus the king of the south (Egypt)

At the time of the end, the king of the south shall attack him, but the king of the north shall rush upon him like a whirlwind, with chariots and horsemen, and with many ships. And he shall come into countries and shall overflow and pass through. He shall come into the glorious land. And tens of thousands shall fall, but these shall be delivered out of his hand: Edom and Moab and the main part of the Ammonites. He shall stretch out his hand against the countries, and the land of Egypt shall not escape. He shall become ruler of the treasures of gold and of silver, and all the precious things of Egypt, and the Libyans and the Cushites shall follow in his train. (Daniel 11:40-43).

Benson: "And shall overflow and pass over — Shall over- spread the land, breaking in and opening himself a passage everywhere by the vast power of his forces." {4}

Keil and Delitzsch: "The stretching forth of his hand upon the countries is a sign expressive of his seizing them, taking possession of them, for which he falls upon them." {5}

..but these shall be delivered out of his hand: Edom and Moab and the main part of the Ammonites.
Note:  According to Daniel 11:41, Edom, Moab and the Ammonites are not eliminated by the IDF before the 70th week of Daniel as Salus speculates!

A few thoughts: At the beginning of the 70th week, the Antichrist will make a seven year "firm covenant with many" involving Israel and her near neighbours. This will allow the Jews to build the third temple and to commence animal sacrifices. (Daniel 9:27, 11:31 cf. Matthew 24:15-16). This long awaited breakthrough suggests that the covenant brokered by the Antichrist will be compelling and will necessitate a cessation of the historic hostility between Israel and her ancient enemies. Daniel 11:40-43 concerns "the time of the end" and does not apply to Antiochus Epiphanes. It appears that the Antichrist will defeat Egypt (the king of the south), and will seize and subjugate various middle eastern countries. (Revelation 6:1). Will it be that Israel will temporarily be in the eye of a satanic storm raging all around them, and that the Antichrist will shield them from the wars and famines inflicted on the world via the four horsemen? If this is correct, then Israel will have good cause to feel confident that the Antichrist is their true friend and ally. The Antichrist will be devious and persuasive beyond that of any human agency. (Daniel 11:40-42, 8:23). The guile of Antiochus Epiphanes foreshadows what will happen with the Antichrist: He shall come in without warning and obtain the kingdom by flatteries. (Daniel 11:21). Taking the above factors into consideration, I think it is reasonable to conclude that the Jews will be persuaded to think themselves secure during the first half of the 70th week. (Ezekiel 38:11).
*Salus places the seals and other prophecies in a “gap” period prior to the 70th week. However, this view is not consistent with the scriptures:

THE FIRST SEAL - THE WHITE HORSE (THE ANTICHRIST): And I looked, and behold, a white horse! And its rider had a bow, and a crown was given to him, and he came out conquering, and to conquer. (Revelation 6:2).
THE SECOND SEAL - THE RED HORSE (WAR): Its rider was permitted to take peace from the earth, so that people should slay one another, and he was given a great sword. (Revelation 6:4).
THE THIRD SEAL- THE BLACK HORSE (FAMINE): And I looked, and behold, a black horse! And its rider had a pair of scales in his hand. And I heard what seemed to be a voice in the midst of the four living creatures, saying, “A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius, and do not harm the oil and wine!”  (Revelation 6:5-6).
THE FOURTH SEAL - THE PALE HORSE: And its rider’s name was Death, and Hades followed him. And they were given authority over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword and with famine and with pestilence and by wild beasts of the earth. (Revelation 6:7-8).

At the mid point of the 70th week, the Antichrist will break his covenant, he will desecrate the temple, and his armies will surround Jerusalem. This will signal the time of Jacob's trouble when the Antichrist's unprecedented persecution against the Jews will begin. These events will be overseen by Satan himself and implemented by the Antichrist. (Revelation 12:13).

Before Bill Salus came up with his theory and published his book Isralestine in 2008, the consensus among bible scholars was that the ten nation confederacy poised to attack Judah in Psalm 83 was the 2 Chronicles 20 incident during the reign of Jehoshaphat (note the reference to Asaph in 2 Chronicles 20:14). The supposed mismatch between the three nation tribes in 2 Chronicles 20 and the ten nation confederacy in Psalm 83 is not strictly accurate since there are overlaps. For instance the Ammonites had close links with Syria and both passages include elements from Turkey and Syria. We should also bear in mind that scriptural accounts of specific events are not necessarily identical. The gospels are a clear example of this. The Moabites and the Ammonites were amongst the bitterest of all the adversaries of the Jews and it is only natural that Asaph would name them as the primary movers. (Kings 24:2; Ezekiel 25:8-11). As such, it would not be surprising if various other tribes not mentioned in 2 Chronicles 20 formed part of their alliance against Judah.

Lange: " {Psalm 83} agrees best with the alliance formed against Jehoshaphat, at the head of which were the Moabites, Ammonites and Edomites (since Kimchi, especially Venema and most of the recent commentators). Yet it must be confessed that even under this assumption there is much to be supplied and left to pure conjecture. For Josephus (Ant. 10:1, 2), gives a multitude of Arabs instead of the Meunim mentioned by the Chronicler. These may possibly be identical with the Ishmaelites and the Hagarenes here mentioned. The latter pitched their tents from the Persian Gulf as far as the country east of Gilead towards the Euphrates (1 Chronicles 10:10), while the former spread themselves (Genesis 25:18), through the Sinaitic peninsula over the Arabian Desert as far as the countries under the sway of the Assyrians in the remote north-east. Now, since in 2 Chronicles 20:2, we must read מֵאֶדְֹם instead of מֵאֲרָם, as indicating the place of departure of these hordes, Edom appears to have been their place of rendezvous, and is given the first place by the Psalmist for this reason, unless we prefer to assume that the hostile nations were enumerated according to their relative geographical positions (Delitzsch). Further we can find a place for Gebal, which is not to be sought to the east of Jordan (Rosenm., De Wette), but south of the Dead Sea, (Gesenius) among the inhabitants of Mt. Seir mentioned by the Chronicler. We can certainly assume also, that Amalek, which was still existing in his time was included by him among the Edomites in the same way as Josephus (Ant. 2:1, 2), reckons ᾼμαληκῖτις as part of Idumæa. In Amos 1:6, too (comp. Joel 4:4,) the tribes along the Mediterranean coast, the Philistines and Phœnicians, appear as combined against Israel. Nor, if the same event is referred to as the one dwelt upon in the Psalm, does it appear in this instance also why the Chronicler omitted them as well as Assyria in his enumeration of the allies. If we assume, then, the identity of the events, the conjecture is at least worth mentioning, that the Levite and Asaphite Jahaziel named in 2 Chronicles 20:14, was the author of this Psalm. (Dathe, Hengst., Delitzsch)." {6}
According to Jamieson-Fausset-Brown and other commentaries on the eschatological context of Isaiah 25:10, Moab is the representative of all the foes of God's people.

Pulpit Commentary: "Perhaps, as the Moabites were, on the whole, the bitterest of all the adversaries of the Jews (see 2 Kings 24:2; Ezekiel 25:8-11), they are regarded as the fittest representatives of the human adversaries of God." {7}

Taking the above into consideration, there is not such a mismatch between Psalm 83 and 2 Chronicles 20 after all.

Balaam's Fourth Oracle

A star will come forth from Jacob, and a scepter will arise from Israel. He will crush the skulls of Moab
and strike down all the sons of Sheth. Edom will become a possession, as will Seir, his enemy; but Israel will perform with valor. A ruler will come from Jacob and destroy the survivors of the city. (Numbers 24:17-19).

The above prophecy received its primary fulfilment during King David's reign. (2 Samuel 8:14). However its ultimate fulfilment is clearly linked with the return of Jesus Christ.

Who is this who comes from Edom, With garments of glowing colors from Bozrah, This One who is majestic in His apparel, Marching in the greatness of His strength? “It is I who speak in righteousness, mighty to save.” (Isaiah 63:1-4).

Since Moab and Edom will be destroyed by Jesus Christ at his second coming, then their prior annihilation in a supposed Psalm 83 war is implausible.

The 2 Chronicles 20 incident records that the planned attack against Judah did not materialize due to God's direct intervention, causing Judah's enemies to destroy one another. (2 Chronicles 20:22-23). This explains the objection by Salus and others that there is no Old Testament fulfilment of this war. Psalm 83 does not actually describes a "war", but only schemes, conspiracies and plots. Psalm 83 is therefore not a "missing eschatalogical prophecy", but rather a past threat against Judah that came to nothing.

Psalm 83 is not presented within a prophetic framework; rather in common with Psalms 79, 80, 82, and 85, Psalm 83 is a "lament” written in the present tense. Asaph is described as a seer in the OT. A seer is the equivalent of a prophet i.e. someone who "sees". We should bear in mind that the OT prophets were spokespersons for God. Their frame of reference was not necessarily eschatological. Asaph's writings do not contain specific eschatological elements as in the case in the books of Daniel, Joel, Habakkuk, Zephaniah etc. There are no specific phrases that identify Psalm 83 as a future event and there is no other verse in the bible that confirms Salus' interpretation. (Matthew 18:16). Prophetic material typically has phrases like "in that day"“in the latter days”“in those days", "at that time" etc. This lack of clarity necessitates that a prophetic interpretation of Psalm 83 relies on conjecture rather than clear exegesis.

It is important to recognize that OT prophets often referred to current situations and circumstances. This is precisely the case in 2 Chronicles 20:

Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jahaziel son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite from Asaph’s descendants, as he stood in the midst of the assembly. And he said, “Listen, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem! Listen, King Jehoshaphat! This is what the LORD says: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army, for the battle does not belong to you, but to God. Tomorrow you are to march down against them. You will see them coming up the Ascent of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the valley facing the Wilderness of Jeruel. You need not fight this battle. Take up your positions, stand firm, and see the salvation of the LORD on your behalf, O Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid or discouraged. Go out and face them tomorrow, for the LORD is with you.’ ” (2 Chronicles 20:14-17).

Another reason Salus gives for the Psalm 83 war: The intention of Israel's enemies is utter annihilation: “Come, let us wipe them out as a nation; let the name of Israel be remembered no more!” (Psalm 83:4). This intention cannot be isolated to a specific eschatological event since Israel's annihilation has been the general objective of her enemies throughout history. (2 Kings 24:2; 2 Chronicles 20:11; Psalms 138:7; Psalm1; Maccabees 3:35; 5:2).

Who are the people propagating Salus' Psalm 83 theory?

I have observed that those who give Salus house room have accepted his theory on a superficial level and have not been diligent in testing his claims. (1 John 4:1). They are generally those who have no qualms about unleashing various dubious theories onto the Body of Christ ~the pre-trib rapture is a prime example of this! Salus is a regular guest on TBN and Daystar. He has also been associated with Jack Hibbs, Tom Hughes, Jonathan Cahn, Billy Crone, Gary Stearman, Sid Roth etc. These teachers are all in the pre-trib rapture loop and their eschatology is twisted in order to accommodate this grave error.

Salus informs us that he sought the expertise of Arnold Fruchtenbaum regarding his theory. This should not impress us. Not only is Fruchtenbaum heavily involved with Lausanne which is ecumenical, his theology is flawed on many levels. {8}

Salus' mentor was Chuck Missler. Again we should not be impressed. Missler (also pre-trib) was a plagiarist and a supporter of Sun Myung Moon (Moonies). {9} Missler produced a two part video series on YouTube presenting the Psalm 86 "alternative view" of the Magog Invasion. Undoubtedly Missler was influential in persuading believers to accept Salus' aberrant teaching. {10}

Salus' Newspaper Exegesis

Salus' teaching regarding the timing of the so called "war" of Psalm 83 is highly speculative and irresponsible. He makes the common error of applying current events and trends from the media to the scriptures. Unfortunately Salus is fond of quoting eschatological verses out of context in order to further his cause. In doing so he misleads believers into misinterpreting the events of the 70th week and preceding. As others have pointed out before me, Moab and Edom will be destroyed by Jesus Christ at his second coming, not by the IDF. This single fact alone demolishes Salus thesis. Salus' speculations produce a lot of hype, and no doubt they generate interest and a lucrative market for his products, but they lack solid exegesis. (1 John 4:1).

DALTON THOMAS: MISREPRESENTATION OF THE BOOK OF REVELATION

 Demonic Torment, Divine Judgment and the Beginning of the End of All Things - YouTube

It was very concerning that Joel Richardson misrepresented the prewrath position regarding the salvation of Israel last week. {1} Since he has not bothered to correct this error, it is necessary to refute him again here and to reiterate the prewrath position: All Israel are saved at the end of the 70th week of Danielnot at the rapture

This week, Dalton Thomas continues to distort the book of Revelation with his warped teaching regarding the fifth and sixth trumpets (the first two woes) in Revelation chapter 9. Dalton Thomas rejects the prewrath position entirely and has come up with his own bizarre scenario for the first six trumpet judgements. He teaches that the church will be present on earth following the sixth seal terror aka the cosmic disturbances of Revelation 6:12-14, and that the persecution of Israel (Jacob's trouble) will continue into the trumpet judgements.

Dalton Thomas begins his eisegesis of Revelation 9:1 by claiming that the star fallen from heaven to earth does not fall but rather just comes down to earth. The Greek verb piptó is unquestionably "fall". {2}

And the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star fallen (peptōkota) from heaven to earth, and he was given the key to the shaft of the bottomless pit. (Revelation 9:1).

According to Dalton Thomas, the context of "the releasing of the trumpet events" is that the church will release judgements on the military coalition of the Antichrist. Specifically, he claims that the prayers of the saints will release the first four trumpets. (Revelation 8:3).

It should be noted that Revelation 8:3 refers back to the prayers of the fifth seal martyrs who are in heavenWhen he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the witness they had borne. They cried out with a loud voice, “O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you will judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” Then they were each given a white robe and told to rest a little longer, until the number of their fellow servants and their brothers should be complete, who were to be killed as they themselves had been.(Revelation 6:9-11).

The prewrath position maintains that the rapture of the church becomes imminent after the sixth seal cosmic disturbances, and that the "great multitude from every nation" described in Revelation 7 are the complete number of resurrected believers from all time. The church therefore is not present on the earth during the trumpet judgements. (Revelation 7:9-13)

Dalton Thomas: The people of God like Moses and Aaron are quietly releasing the judgements of God on the Antichrists empire and the rebellious of the nations who refuse to submit to the leadership of God in the midst of his judgements as He releases judgements on those who are targeting the Jewish people and the people of the covenant, believers in Jesus.. We are releasing judgements on the empire, the coalition, the military ..that is targeting the Jewish people for annihilation. that is the context of the releasing of these trumpet events.

The above speculations are extremely problematic for a number of reasons.

The scriptures provide compelling evidence that the Day of the Lord i.e. the eschatological wrath of God, begins immediately after the tribulation..   Immediately after the tribulation of those days: ‘The sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.’ (Matthew 24:29).  We know that the Day of the Lord becomes imminent after the cosmic disturbances due to the terrified cries of the kings of the earth. (Revelation 6:17). The Antichrist's persecution against Israel and the church therefore comes to an end before God's wrath is implemented via the trumpet and the later bowl judgements. Revelation 8 and 9 describe the angels as the agents who sound the trumpets and release the judgements. We see no process of negotiation/proclamation involving human agencies associated with these events, as was the case with Moses and Aaron in Exodus 7 and following. Rather, the previous prayers of the fifth seal martyrs in heaven are being addressed here. (Revelation 6:9-11). NOTE: The two witnesses will be prophesying and performing signs during this time, and one of these witnesses may in fact be Moses. (Revelation 11:4-14).

Apart from the specific scriptures that inform us that the tribulation precedes the Day of the Lord, there are also further considerations. According to Dalton Thomas, the Antichrist coalition will be carrying out a campaign against Jews and Christians during the devastating trumpet judgements. We should bear in mind that the trumpets follow the cosmic disturbances and the rapture, and that the wicked will have seen the sign of the son of man in heaven.. (Matthew 24:30-31). Their reaction at this point is pure panic: “Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who is seated on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb, for the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?” (Revelation 6:16-17). During the five month demon locust torment, everyone without the seal of God on their forehead will be in such extreme distress and sickness that they will seek death and will not find it. (Revelation 9:6). Any suggestion that the Antichrist coalition will be capable of undertaking a supposed campaign against Jews and Christians during this period is untenable. Similarly the second woe entails the mass slaughter of one third of mankind. Once again it is insupportable that a campaign against Jews and Christians will be ongoing during this time.

So the four angels who had been prepared for this hour and day and month and year were released to kill a third of mankind. And the number of mounted troops was two hundred million; I heard their number. (Revelation 9:15-16).

The problem with inaccurate teaching about the rapture is that it skews the rest of the book of Revelation and it confuses believers. It is not recommended that we tamper with the book of Revelation. (Revelation 22:18-19).

The eschatology of both Joel Richardson and Dalton Thomas is very twisted. I would advise believers to test the spirits and avoid these men. (1 John 4:1; Acts 17:11 cf. Romans 16:17-18). Frontier Alliance International is a slick operation, {3} but we should be aware that outward appearance is not indicative of sound teaching or of God's approval. (1 Samuel 16:7). Whatever is going on with Richardson and Thomas at the Golan Heights is unsound and makes me very uneasy. {4}

JOEL RICHARDSON'S PREWRATH RAPTURE CONUNDRUM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsatQIfGjCA
The Second Exodus in the Book of Revelation: Maranatha Global Bible Study 24

In the above video, Joel Richardson explores the differences between the prewrath and the post-trib models and the imagery of the Exodus in the Book of Revelation.

Joel Richardson's Prewrath Conundrum: When is Israel saved?

Richardson: "This is a big problem for the prewrath camp..  if they are to be consistent they have to say that all Israel gets saved at the Parousia, at the time of the rapture, which would be some time in the middle of the final three and a half years." (22:00 mark)

Joel Richardson is in error when he states that the prewrath position teaches that all Israel is saved at the Parousia/rapture. The prewrath position states that the 144,000 remnant of Israel are sealed before the seventh trumpet is sounded. (Revelation 7:1-8), and that "all Israel" are saved at the end of the 70th week of Daniel in order to fulfil the 490 period:

Seventy weeks are decreed about your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to put an end to sin, and to atone for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal both vision and prophet, and to anoint a most holy place. Know therefore and understand that from the going out of the word to restore and build Jerusalem to the coming of an anointed one, a prince, there shall be seven weeks. Then for sixty-two weeks it shall be built again with squares and moat, but in a troubled time. (Daniel 9:24-25).

Richardson continues his distortion of the prewrath position and asks some very confusing questions. (24:21 mark).

Richardson: "The prewrath camp is now faced with a conundrum.. Is Israel saved after the trumpets and the bowls, or are they saved back at the Parousia/rapture when they look at the one that appears over them? That's a significant difficulty... So if the goal is to wait until the end of the final three and a half years, why do they have to wait, they all get saved before this, or they get raptured before this.. If Jesus appears, where does He go? Does He go back up to heaven, or does he come down to earth? Paul the apostle says that when Christ is revealed, we will be revealed with him.." Richardson misquotes this verse. Paul actually states that we will appear with him in gloryWhen Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. (Colossians 3:4). Richardson continues: "The inference is, it sounds like he is coming back, not that he comes in the clouds, we are raptured, and then we go back up with Him. Well does he go back up there, does He come down, is he executing judgement on the ground or is He in heaven for a while.. and then He comes back?"

If Joel Richardson had paid any attention at all to prewrath teaching, he would know that there is no conflict between Matthew 24:29-31 and Zechariah 12:10-14. Richardson inappropriately aligns Matthew 24:29-31 and Zechariah 12:10-14. He fails to mention that Jesus quotes directly from Joel 2:10 in this passage. (Matthew 24:29). (21:00 mark). Both Matthew 24:29-31 and Joel 2:10 refer to the cosmic disturbances. Matthew continues to describe the rapture preceded by the sign of the Son of man when every eye will see him, even those who pierced him (Matthew 24:30; Revelation 1:7).

The prewrath view is explicitly delineated as follows:

* "All Israel" are saved at the end of the 70th week of Daniel.
* When Jesus appears every eye will see Him. (Revelation 1:7).
* The rapture occurs at some point between the sixth and seventh seal of Revelation,
after the great tribulation before the wrath of God is implemented, (Revelation 6:17).
* After the rapture Jesus will usher God's people before the Father's throne in heaven. (John 14:1-3, Revelation 7:9, and 2 Corinthians 5:10).
* The saints return with Jesus at the battle of Armageddon. (1 Thessalonians 3:13).

Richardson concludes this video with a pep talk which verges on indolence. He glosses over the differences between the prewrath and post-trib rapture positions and he muddies the waters by making statements like: "It is ok to not settle on a clear position..  there is tension no matter which position we take..  there are no rewards for whoever has the perfect timeline." I would not argue against him that the way we live as Christians is critically important. However, the way we live should not be at the expense of applying ourselves to studying the scriptures. Although it is possible to be saved and hold differing opinions about the rapture, I think it is irresponsible to downplay these differences. I actually think that it is possible to come to a clear understanding on the rapture question, and that there will be rewards for those who diligently search the scriptures and sincerely hold on to sound doctrine.

Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers. (1 Timothy 4:16 cf. 2 Timothy 2:15).

Richardson's perversion of the prewrath position is either based on ignorance, or else it is a deliberate attempt to sabotage prewrath teaching. Whichever is the case, he has completely misrepresented the prewrath position, and in the process he has created a "conundrum" of his own making. This is very unfortunate and adds to the confusion surrounding the rapture question.

Richardson obviously does not value the principle of biblical separation. His appearances on TBN and CBN with various questionable characters is alarming to say the least. (Romans 16:17; Ephesians 5:11). One way or another, Joel Richardson and his latest questionable associate, Dalton Thomas (Frontier Alliance International), do more harm than good with their eschatological distortions. Beware of Frontier Alliance International {1}
